This is a voluntary, temporary role open to current HI Canada staff. Candidates must apply and will take on inspection responsibilities in addition to their existing position. The role offers meaningful cross-network exposure and the opportunity to travel across Canada as part of your work. The Inspector will have a thorough knowledge of HIC Quality Standards, a keen eye for detail, and will have previously held a hostel manager position in a hostel with a minimum inspection score of 90%. For the right person, this is as much an opportunity as it is a responsibility. The primary function of this position is to ensure that all aspects of hostel operations comply with applicable regulations, safety standards, company policies and quality standards, thereby maintaining the integrity of the association and guest satisfaction by conducting regular and thorough inspections of all association hostels. The inspector monitors the cleanliness and maintenance of common areas, bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens, building exterior and yard. You'll discuss these issues with the manager, assess the cleanliness of each available room, report your findings to the manager, and travel between hostels if necessary. Overall, the role of the Inspector is essential in ensuring the high standards and reliability that guests expect. The combination of detailed observation skills, in-depth hostel knowledge, and a commitment to continuous improvement is essential to excel in this position. This role requires approximately 5–10 business days of travel per year. Hostel assignment and the number of days required per inspection are determined by Sylvianne L’Allier (Operations Administrator). All travel and accommodation are covered. Inspectors receive a $150/day recognition payment in addition to their regular compensation. This work does not affect vacation or time off entitlements. Inspectors stay in HI Canada hostels during inspections and are required to spend at least one night on-site, access guest services, and participate in hostel social life as part of the evaluation. A flexible schedule is required, including availability for late-day and evening work.
