The Hospital Senior Director of Nursing, Medicine will provide clinical leadership and management for designated care areas on a twenty-four-hour basis, aligning with the philosophy, goals, and mission of NYU Langone Health. This role assumes responsibility and accountability for all aspects of nursing practice and performance within the designated areas, ensuring the achievement of organizational goals and targets. The position also involves leading large-scale organizational change efforts and fostering an environment of excellence in patient/family service, staff growth and development, quality nursing care, and staff engagement and satisfaction.

Requirements

  • Current Registered Professional Nurse licensure in New York State.
  • Doctoral degree (PhD or DNP) in clinical nursing practice or research required.
  • Pertinent clinical knowledge preferred.
  • Certification in nursing leadership required.
  • Ability to apply nursing process toward achievement of specific outcomes in an organized fashion to address patient/family satisfaction and quality indicators.
  • Excellent communication (both oral and written), interpersonal, organization, critical thinking, problem solving, and leadership skills.
  • Minimum 5 years Leadership or supervisory experience.
  • Registered Nurse License-NYS
  • Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Designs, implements, and evaluates programs for multiple nursing units or departments.
  • Provides executive leadership to ensure compliance with accreditation, regulatory standards, service standards and policies at the organizational, local, state, and federal level.
  • Collaborates with the interprofessional team, leading the nursing division to ensure excellence in quality, patient experience, and efficiency.
  • Develops positive and productive relationships across disciplines to establish strategic partnerships to achieve shared goals.
  • Oversees the development and implementation of interdisciplinary outcome standards.
  • Leads interdisciplinary quality and performance improvement projects pertinent to departmental and organizational goals and objectives.
  • Fosters positive and productive work and care environments, founded in the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion to attract and retain staff.
  • Demonstrates a steadfast commitment to engaging and meaningfully recognizing staff.

  • Conducts interviews, hires, develops, and evaluates departmental leadership from orientation through termination, if necessary, according to established standards.
  • Evaluates the performance of personnel in a fair and transparent manner.
  • Serves as role model by demonstrating visibility, accessibility and effective communication that conveys a strong sense of advocacy and support for staff and leadership.
  • Establish a financial plan and utilize data to make strategic decisions.
  • Design the operational and capital budgets for the service line(s) (salary and non-salary where applicable), in conjunction with the clinical leaders; monitors expenses as balanced with patient volume and other indicators; and evaluates outcomes, making modifications and adjustments as indicated.
  • Coordinates care delivery using labor productivity data to plan and evaluate staffing patterns, discharge and/or volume targets.
  • Guides clinical leaders in planning and validation of staffing patterns.
  • Holds self and others accountable for the delivery of exemplary care in a cost-efficient manner.
  • Coordinates and facilitates activities to promote service and interdisciplinary teamwork.
  • Role models service standards in actions and communications with patients, families, staff and other disciplines.
  • Functions as a respectful leader of the health care team.
  • Develop, approve and implement nursing and organizational policy, incorporating the precepts of shared governance.
  • Collects, analyzes, and utilizes data to drive practice changes that integrate quality, safety, patient experience, and productivity metrics to achieve excellence in patient and nursing outcomes.
  • Drives staff involvement in nursing research and evidence-based practice efforts.
  • Fosters high reliability concepts within the unit/organizational structure.
  • Communicates with clarity and integrity to build trust with all stakeholders.
  • Fosters a culture of inquiry, innovation, and transformation with a focus on the future.
  • Leads and supports developing of new insights to complex situations, innovative designs, and programs/processes.
  • Responsible for maintaining knowledge and ensuring compliance with the current Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) and responding timely to Step 2 grievances.
