About The Position

This is a working supervisor who is responsible for all of the chemical application activities involving planting beds, turf, shrubs, trees, interior foliage plants, mulched areas, drainage canals, lakes, ponds, buildings, fences, parking lots, and sidewalks on the main campus at LSU Baton Rouge and other off site LSU locations. Other areas of responsibility will include chemical applications in the greenhouse or can-yard. This position requires knowledge of pesticides primarily herbicides and insecticides as well as the plant materials receiving the application. This position requires the ability to perform, supervise, and schedule activities necessary to treat weed and insect infestations as well as manage these potential problems using 1PM principles. A Louisiana State pesticide applicator license is required for this position; the applicator must have a sound understanding of SOS 's, product labels, and safety practices as put forth by the state of La. pesticide license. This position requires organization skills including good record keeping, self-initiative to determine chemical needs, and self-motivation to complete tasks with a minimum of supervision. This position requires the ability to operate and calibrate spray equipment attached to tractors, ATV 's, or golf carts.

Requirements

  • Three years of experience or training in farming, the care and maintenance of trees and shrubs, or groundskeeping; OR Eighteen semester hours in a plant science or landscape field of study.

  • Valid driver's license
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds.
  • Climb ladders.
  • Ability to stoop, kneel, and bend for extended periods.
  • Must have valid U.S. work authorization at the time of hire and maintain that valid work authorization throughout employment.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise assigned personnel and/or personally perform the application of herbicides or insecticides to turf areas including manicured lawns in the Quad and Parade Ground, mulched areas under trees, flowerbeds, ground covers, shrub beds, small and large trees, campus drainage canals, campus lakes or ponds, building perimeters, fences, parking lots, and sidewalks. -65%
  • Perform other duties as assigned when chemical application is not possible such as interior plant maintenance, hand weeding, equipment preventive maintenance to keep calibrations and assure proper function, greenhouse or can yard activities, flowerbed maintenance, bed mulching, etc.-20%
  • Maintain proper records to indicate when and where chemicals are applied, what kind and what amount of chemical, results of application. Order supplies as needed and funded. Maintain proper licensing. -10%
  • Keep inventory of Chem. Shed and maintain orderliness to assure safe and clean working environment when storing and mixing chemicals. -5%
