Hoos First serves as the hub for the first-generation and limited-income student experience at UVA. We aim to empower, support, and advocate for students who historically may find difficulty in navigating the college process. Our student-centered programming highlights the network of services and resources available at the University of Virginia such as personal well-being, social engagement, career development, graduate school preparation, financial literacy, and academic support. From a student’s first day on Grounds until those closing minutes of Final Exercises, our team is committed to making sure that the Wahoo experience is accessible and enjoyable for all! The Hoos First Student Center serves as a gathering space for the first-generation and limited-income student community and allies at UVA. The Center offers a wealth of resources for students to engage with, including books and games, graduate school test prep and study books, a wellness corner, an affirmations wall, and more. The Center features lounge areas, a presentation space, and a conference room. All UVA community members are welcome in the Hoos First Student Center! Hoos First undergraduate interns will gain practical, hands-on administrative and leadership experience, and collaborate with diverse populations of students, faculty, and staff. These positions work to increase community involvement and to enhance students’ collegiate experience by supporting the initiatives of Hoos First. Interns will also staff the front desk as needed and provide hospitality services for students, student leaders, CIOs, and other guests utilizing the space. Under the supervision of Hoos First professional staff, interns will perform a range of duties, including program development, community outreach, and assisting with special projects that support the Hoos First mission.
