About The Position

Business Services at the University of Virginia (UVA) seeks applications for the UVA Transit HOOS Driving Training Program for the department of Parking & Transportation. The HOOS Driving Training Program, a partnership with UVA Pipelines & Pathways, provides structured coursework and paid on-the-job training as a full-time, benefited FlexRide or Ride Driver with UVA Transit at the University of Virginia’s Department of Parking and Transportation. UVA FlexRide drivers provide curb-to-curb transportation services to members of the University community who are unable to use fixed-route transportation services due to a disability. UVA Ride Drivers provide overnight fare-free shuttle service for University students and staff. Upon completion of training, employees will have been onboarded at UVA, completed safety and security training and basic computer skills instruction, and have the necessary workplace and customer service skills to serve as a FlexRide or Ride driver for UVA Transit. After training, employees will begin defensive driving and practical on-the-road skill building with UVA Transit prior to beginning their regular FlexRide or UVA Ride (overnight) shifts. This is a joint training program for UVA FlexRide and UVA Ride. Candidates may indicate their preferred program at the time of interview. Successful candidates will be notified of what program position they are being offered. Paid training includes: Orientation, Onboarding, and Benefits Safe Driving Assessment Safety and Security Training – OSHA 10 Safety, CPR/First Aid/AED, UPD Title IX, Sexual Harassment in the Workplace, PASS (Passenger Assistence, Safety, and Sensitivity), Mental Health Awareness, etc. Workplace Readiness Training – customer service, dealing with difficult customers, time management, teamwork, problem-solving, conflict resolution, professional etiquette, etc. Basic Computer Skills Training – basic computer and mobile device usage, navigating Workday for work-related functions, etc. Training will start on Monday, July 13, 2026, and go through Friday, July 24, 2026. Training will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent or 2+ years working in a professional setting.
  • At least 8 months of prior work experience. Experience gained during part-time work as a student may be considered.
  • Valid Virginia Driver's License. Must have a -3 or above DMV point balance via a safe driving record.
  • The ability to follow and enforce specific instructions and the ability to communicate effectively with the public and over two-way radio is essential.
  • Applicants must be able to read, write, and speak in the English language.
  • General knowledge of computer usage; ability to type, use email, and interface with web-based systems for payroll and performance management is essential.
  • The ability to drive any/all vans or support vehicles.
  • Selected candidates will be required to be able to drive any/all vans and support vehicles in the fleet.
  • This position is considered essential and is subject to emergency and stand-by call.
  • University Transit Service and Parking and Transportation have services that operate 24 hours per day/7 days a week. This requires that all employees have flexibility with scheduling.

Responsibilities

  • Operate any/all vans and other fleet vehicles safely by applying established defensive driving principles.
  • Follow standard University Transit Service operating procedures and comply with Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles and Transportation regulations.
  • Receive ride requests via a department-issued mobile device (tablet) and document passenger pick-ups and drop-offs.
  • Ensure that all appropriate logs are kept and that any information affecting safe vehicle operation is reported.
  • Safely transport passengers with disabilities and individualized mobility needs to assigned destinations in accordance with ADA requirements and departmental procedures.
  • Follow standard UVA Transit’s operating procedures and comply with Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles and Transportation regulations.
  • Receive ride requests via a department-issued mobile device and document passenger pickups and drop-offs. Ability to use and interact with onboard technology such as tablets and software.
  • Assist passengers courteously, respectfully, and empathetically with boarding and exiting the vehicle as necessary and secure/deploy passengers with mobility devices or other assistive equipment.
  • Ensure that all appropriate logs are kept and that any information affecting safe vehicle operation is reported.
