About The Position

The Physical Therapy Assistant implements an individual patient therapy care plan that has been prepared by the Physical Therapist and works under the supervision of the Physical Therapist. This role involves observing and recording patient activities and findings, reporting client reactions to treatment and changes in condition to the physician. The assistant will also instruct other health team personnel, including home health aides and family members, in specific phases of physical therapy. Participation in discharge activities and assisting the Physical Therapist with discharge summaries are key functions. Effective communication with all care providers is essential. Under the supervision of the physical therapist, the assistant will aid in the evaluation and development of rehabilitative care plans and periodic re-evaluations. This includes performing routine strengthening and therapeutic exercises, teaching exercise programs to patients and families, and consulting with the therapist on home visit outcomes. Daily progress notes must be written and submitted within 72 hours, along with periodic summary reports.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year College or technical school; or six months to one-year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Communicate effectively in English.
  • Work well in a team or alone.
  • Organized and flexible.
  • Computer proficient.
  • At least 2 years’ Physical Therapy Assistant experience.
  • Registered Physical Therapy Assistant in the State of Florida.
  • CPR certification.
  • Must pass a background screening through the Care Provider Background Screening Clearinghouse.

Responsibilities

  • Implements an individual patient therapy care plan prepared by the Physical Therapist.
  • Works under the supervision of the Physical Therapist.
  • Identifies possible ineffective drug therapy or adverse reactions, significant side effects, drug allergies, and contra-indicated medication and reports to supervisor.
  • Observes and records activities and findings in the clinical record and reports to the physician the client's reaction to treatment and any changes in the client's condition.
  • Instructs other health team personnel, including the home health aide and family members, in certain phases of physical therapy.
  • Participates with staff, client, and physician in discharge activities.
  • Assists the Physical Therapist in completing the Physical Therapy discharge summary.
  • Communicates effectively with all those providing care.
  • Assists in evaluation and development of the rehabilitative plan of care and in periodic re-evaluation as indicated.
  • Performs routine strengthening and therapeutic exercises.
  • Assists in teaching exercise programs to patient and family.
  • Consults with the therapist regarding the outcome of home visits and reports physical findings in written form.
  • Writes daily progress notes on patients and submits same within 72 hours.
  • Prepares periodic summary reports as indicated.
