About The Position

This role is for a Home Economics Teacher in a Special School. The teacher will be responsible for planning and preparing courses and lessons, teaching pupils according to their educational needs, and assessing, recording, and reporting on their progress. The position involves promoting the general progress and well-being of pupils, providing advice and guidance, communicating with parents and external bodies, and participating in meetings. The teacher will also be involved in staff development, maintaining discipline, safeguarding health and safety, preparing pupils for public examinations, and contributing to the review and development of management activities. This role requires adherence to the professional duties of a teacher as outlined in the Teachers' (Terms and Conditions of Employment) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1987.

Requirements

  • Hold a teaching qualification which meets the requirements for recognition to teach in grant-aided schools in Northern Ireland.
  • Hold a teaching qualification in Home Economics and/or have studied Home Economics as a subsidiary subject or as an area of specialism as part of teacher training.
  • Demonstrable experience of developing positive relationships for learning with children and young people.
  • Demonstrable experience of using digital media/technology to enhance teaching and learning.
  • Be registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up post.
  • Knowledge of Northern Ireland Curriculum.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Safeguarding and Child Protection policy/practice.
  • Knowledge of the SEND Code of Practice and its implications.
  • Current working knowledge of a range of teaching strategies to effectively meet the learning needs of children and young people with Special Educational Needs.
  • Knowledge and understanding of current assessment methods used with children and young people who have Special Educational Needs in order to diagnose, plan for learning and measure progress.
  • Knowledge of approaches to promoting positive behaviour for learning eg. Restorative Practice.
  • Knowledge of Information Technology systems such as digital classroom tools/media and the use of tablets/mobile technologies.
  • Effective teaching and classroom management skills to inspire and challenge pupils to raise achievement.
  • Proven ability to provide a supportive, inclusive learning environment.
  • Ability to use initiative, solve problems and be flexible.
  • Ability to seek and avail of opportunities to increase his/her own professional competence as a teacher.
  • Ability to work collaboratively to promote positive relationships with pupils, colleagues, parents and the wider community.
  • Ability to work as an effective member of a team, and to motivate self and others.
  • Evidence of how your experience and approach to work reflect the School’s Values/ethos.

Responsibilities

  • Planning and preparing courses and lessons.
  • Teaching pupils according to their educational needs, including setting and marking work.
  • Assessing, recording, and reporting on the development, progress, and attainment of pupils.
  • Promoting the general progress and well-being of individual pupils and any assigned class or group.
  • Providing advice and guidance to pupils on educational and social matters, and on further education and future careers.
  • Making records of and reports on the personal and social needs of pupils.
  • Communicating and consulting with the parents of pupils.
  • Communicating and co-operating with external bodies as approved by the employing authority and Board of Governors.
  • Participating in meetings arranged for the purposes of pupil progress, communication, and co-operation.
  • Providing oral and written assessments, reports, and references relating to individual pupils and groups of pupils.
  • Participating in staff development and performance review schemes.
  • Reviewing teaching methods and programmes of work.
  • Participating in arrangements for further training and professional development.
  • Advising and co-operating with the Principal and other teachers on curriculum, teaching materials, programmes, methods, and pastoral arrangements.
  • Maintaining good order and discipline among pupils.
  • Safeguarding pupils' health and safety.
  • Participating in meetings related to the school curriculum, administration, or organisation.
  • Preparing pupils for public examinations and assessing them for these purposes.
  • Contributing to the selection and professional development of other teachers, including induction and assessment of probationary teachers.
  • Co-ordinating or managing the work of other teachers.
  • Contributing to the review, development, and management of curriculum, organisation, and pastoral functions.
  • Participating in administrative and organisational tasks, including the management of support staff and allocation of equipment.
  • Attending assemblies.
  • Registering pupil attendance and supervising pupils.
  • Supervising and teaching any pupils whose teacher is not available, subject to specific conditions.
  • Willingness to teach pupils with Moderate Learning Difficulties in a Special School setting.
  • Willingness to deliver an accreditation within the Home Economics subject area.
