About The Position

The Histotechnologist I will perform skilled and accurate cutting on patient specimens under supervision, interact with sending sites and ordering physicians, perform quality control and specimen-related checks, and comply with all applicable local, state, and federal laboratory requirements. This role involves maintaining stringent standards for quality, communicating issues to management, performing routine and non-routine histology tasks including sectioning and H&E staining, macro-dissection of samples, monitoring workflow, preparing reagents, and documenting equipment maintenance. The position also requires interaction with internal and external customers, processing specimens for research, assisting in process improvements, workflow development, equipment specification, and providing guidance to R&D staff. The role demands the ability to integrate feedback, prioritize tasks with a focus on quality, apply attention to detail, work independently and in a team, communicate effectively, and maintain open communication with various stakeholders. Strong computer and interpersonal skills are essential, along with upholding company values and supporting the Quality Management System. Regular and reliable attendance, an inclusion mindset, and the ability to work the designated schedule, including overtime as needed, are required. The role involves significant computer/mobile device use, sitting, standing, and lifting, as well as the use of laboratory equipment and potential exposure to hazardous materials. Travel between Redwood City locations may be required.

Requirements

Associate Degree.
2+ years of experience in a histology laboratory with competency in microtomy/cutting, embedding, and routine staining.
Demonstrated ability to perform the Essential Duties of the position with or without accommodation.
Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Nice To Haves

Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Sciences or Life Sciences field.
ASCP Board of Certification, to include Histotechnician (HT) American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), or Histotechnologist (HTL) ASCP.

Responsibilities

Perform skilled and accurate cutting on patient specimens under supervision.
Interact with sending sites and ordering physicians.
Perform quality control and specimen-related checks.
Comply with all applicable local, state, and federal laboratory requirements.
Maintain stringent standards for quality to identify any issues that might adversely impact the quality of test results and/or employee safety.
Communicate issues to the appropriate management representatives to ensure prompt resolution, as needed.
Perform routine and non-routine activities involved in histology, to include sectioning and hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining under supervision.
Perform macro-dissection of samples under supervision.
Monitor and process workflow queues.
Prepare reagents, solutions, and controls.
Perform and document equipment maintenance and calibration.
Assist in sample returns, as needed.
Interact with internal pathologists, internal associates, and external customers in accordance with Exact Sciences’ standard operating procedures (SOP’s) to ensure specimens are processed in a timely manner with high quality.
Process specimens for research and development sponsored studies.
Assist in the identification of opportunities for process improvements for Exact Sciences’ histopathology.
Assist in workflow, protocol, and related SOP development.
Assist in equipment specification, installation, and maintenance.
Provide guidance and training to research and development (R&D) staff relating to histopathology.
Provide summary reports on process metrics, as needed.
Contribute to corporate strategy for inspection preparation or additional regulatory approval relating to Exact Sciences histopathology.
Assist in running projects for development of Exact Sciences histopathology around new product services and processes.
Participate in tactical development projects, as needed.
