About The Position

The Histology Technologist prepares tissue specimens for microscopic examination and analysis by processing, performing microtomy, and mounting specimens on glass slides. This is a per diem, onsite position at Newton-Wellesley Hospital. The role does not require patient care.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree in a related field; experience cannot be substituted for the degree.
0–1 year of clinical or histology experience.
Fundamental knowledge of basic histotechnique, including fixation, decalcification, processing, embedding, and routine staining.
Maintain and update clinical knowledge and skills.

Nice To Haves

Histotechnician certification, HT(ASCP), from the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP-BOC), preferred.
Histotechnologist certification, HTL(ASCP), from the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP-BOC), preferred.

Responsibilities

Process, embed, and section tissue for slides.
Embed control tissue and cut control slides to maintain an adequate control library.
Perform preventative maintenance and quality control procedures, including oiling and cleaning microtomes, cleaning processors, and changing staining solutions.
Use appropriate personal protective equipment to maintain employee safety.
Maintain case identification and ensure appropriate tracking throughout the process to support patient safety.
Follow hospital and laboratory policies and safety practices, and maintain a safe, clean, and prepared work area.
