About The Position

The Histology Technologist prepares tissue specimens for microscopic examination and analysis by processing, embedding, sectioning, and mounting tissue on glass slides. The role also maintains control tissue and slide libraries, performs equipment maintenance and quality control, follows personal protective equipment requirements, and ensures case identification and tracking to support patient safety. The position is per diem and onsite at Newton-Wellesley Hospital.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in a related field; experience cannot substitute for the degree.
• 0–1 year of clinical or histology experience required.
• Fundamental knowledge of basic histotechnique, including fixation, decalcification, processing, embedding, and routine staining.
• Maintains and updates clinical knowledge and skills.

Nice To Haves

• Histotechnician certification, HT(ASCP), from the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification, preferred.
• Histotechnologist certification, HTL(ASCP), from the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification, preferred.

Responsibilities

• Processes, embeds, and sections tissue for slides.
• Embeds control tissue and cuts control slides to maintain an adequate control library.
• Performs preventative maintenance and quality control procedures, including oiling and cleaning microtomes, cleaning processors, and changing staining solutions.
• Uses personal protective equipment appropriately to maintain employee safety.
• Maintains case identification and ensures appropriate tracking throughout the process to support patient safety.
• Follows hospital and laboratory policies and safety practices and maintains a safe, clean, and prepared work area.
