About The Position

This role involves the processing, preparation, and staining of patient tissue samples for microscopic examination. Responsibilities include preparing slides, reagents, and solutions, performing data processing functions such as specimen accessioning and labeling, and assisting Pathologists and Pathologist Assistants with procedures like frozen sections and grossing. The position also requires performing special stains, equipment maintenance and troubleshooting, and contributing to quality control and procedure manual updates. Additionally, the role involves inventory management, training new employees, presenting in-services, maintaining confidentiality, and ensuring a clean and safe work environment. Professional growth and adherence to hospital policies are also key aspects of this position.

Requirements

  • Ability to read, write and communicate in English.
  • Recent experience (1 year in the last 5) in Anatomic Pathology, where handling and processing specimens was a function of the job, and enrolled in coursework to fulfill the ASCP education requirement.
  • OR, An Associate Degree in a hard science and recent clinical lab experience (1 year in the last 5) where handling and processing specimens was a function of the job.
  • Must become HT ASCP eligible (as defined by ASCP) within 24 months of hire.
  • HT ASCP Eligible (as defined by ASCP).
  • Must take and pass HT (ASCP) exam within 18 months.
  • Copy of highest level degree and/or transcript in a clinical field or specialty, If no degree a copy of high school diploma.
  • HT (ASCP) certified.
  • Copy of highest level degree and/or transcript in a clinical field or specialty, If no degree a copy of high school diploma.

Responsibilities

  • Obtains, processes, embeds, cuts, mounts and stains patient tissue samples.
  • Prepares microscope slides, reagents and solutions.
  • Performs data processing functions to include; specimen accessioning and labeling, creation of tissue cassettes, and generation of Histology worksheets.
  • Assists the Pathologist with frozen section procedures.
  • Assists the Pathologist Assistant and Pathologist with grossing room procedures.
  • Performs special stains procedures.
  • Performs and documents troubleshooting and preventive maintenance on equipment.
  • Assists Section Supervisor in the review and revision of procedure manuals.
  • Makes recommendations for improvements in quality and/or efficiency to the immediate supervisor.
  • Practice efficient and economical use of laboratory supplies; checks the inventory, orders supplies and restocks upon arrival.
  • Assists Section Supervisors and Pathologist in maintaining programs including but not limited to: quality control, instrument maintenance, quality assurance and improvement and the development of new methodologies and procedures.
  • Assists the Section Supervisor and HTL in the maintenance of the Histology Procedure Manuals in compliance with CAP and CLSI standards
  • Teaches new department employees current histology principles and practices as requested by the section supervisor or pathologist.
  • Present in-services as requested.
  • Maintains confidentiality of information deemed confidential.
  • Maintains harmonious and cooperative relations with fellow employees, medical staff, patients and guests and serves effectively as part of the Laboratory team in performing professional service to patients.
  • Maintains work benches, testing areas and other work areas in a clean, sanitary and free of clutter condition for the safety of patients, guests and staff.
  • Maintains professional growth and development through seminars workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.
  • Maintains a thorough knowledge of departmental and hospital policies and procedures as they pertain to the job, including the fire and disaster plans.
  • Consistently provides service excellence to all patients, family members, visitors, volunteers, and co-workers.
  • Performs other work-related duties and activities as assigned or requested.
