About The Position

The Histology Lab Technician processes tissues submitted to the department and prepares and stains tissue slides, ensuring they are available in a timely manner for pathologist review and interpretation. The role performs work in both the MOHS lab and the histology lab, including specimen processing, tissue preparation, staining, equipment maintenance, and recordkeeping. The position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Requirements

Bachelor of Science degree in a science-related field.
Knowledge of technique and anatomy.
Ability to communicate in an active multi-office environment.
Ability to efficiently operate job-related office equipment.
Ability to follow or provide verbal and written instructions.
Basic to intermediate computer operation skills.
Mathematical and/or analytical ability for basic to intermediate problem solving.
Detail-oriented, professional attitude, and reliability.
Specialty knowledge of systems relating to the job function.

Responsibilities

Process specimens, including freezing tissue and cutting and staining it with a cryostat.
Place tissue on slides; label and store slides.
Prepare and mix solutions used in the MOHS lab and use and handle materials and reagents appropriately.
Follow hazardous-waste guidelines and OSHA safety regulations, maintain a safe lab environment, and comply with HIPAA, billing compliance, and safety guidelines.
Record daily equipment temperatures and maintain equipment quality-control records in accordance with CLIA guidelines.
Accession tissue by entering patient information into the computer.
Perform grossing as a CLIA-credentialed gross technician.
Process and embed tissues.
Cut tissues on a microtome and mount them on slides for staining.
Perform H&E staining with an automated stainer, manual histochemical stains, and immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining with an automated stainer.
Perform daily equipment maintenance and routinely file slides and blocks.
