About The Position

The Histology Lab Technician processes tissues submitted to the department and prepares and stains tissue slides, ensuring they are available promptly for pathologist review and interpretation. The role performs both MOHS and histology laboratory work, including specimen processing, tissue preparation, staining, equipment maintenance, and recordkeeping. The position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science in a science-related field.
• Knowledge of technique and anatomy.
• Ability to communicate in an active multi-office environment.
• Ability to efficiently operate job-related office equipment.
• Ability to follow or provide verbal and written instructions.
• Basic to intermediate computer operation skills.
• Mathematical and/or analytical ability for basic to intermediate problem solving.
• Detail-oriented, professional attitude, and reliability.
• Specialty knowledge of systems relating to the job function.

Responsibilities

• Process MOHS specimens, freeze tissue, cut and stain tissue using a cryostat, and place tissue on slides.
• Label and store slides; prepare and mix solutions used in the MOHS lab; and handle materials and reagents appropriately.
• Follow hazardous-waste guidelines and OSHA safety regulations, maintain a safe laboratory environment, and comply with HIPAA, billing, and safety guidelines.
• Maintain equipment and record daily temperatures and quality-control information in accordance with CLIA guidelines.
• Accession tissue by entering information into the computer under the patient name.
• Perform grossing when CLIA credentialed.
• Process and embed tissues; cut tissue on a microtome and mount it on slides for staining.
• Perform H&E staining using an automated stainer, manual histochemical stains, and immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining using an automated stainer.
• Perform daily equipment maintenance and routinely file slides and blocks.
