About The Position

The Histology Generalist performs laboratory analyses and tests. In addition, they collect, prepare samples, set up instruments, identification verification, run tests, interpret, and release test results. Requirements

  • B/S in Biology or other Life Sciences.
  • Coursework in anatomy/physiology required.
  • Minimum 6 months’ experience as Grossing Tech/Histology Tech required
  • Laboratory skills, with experience setting up, running, and reading lab tests and operating lab instruments
  • Knowledge of lab equipment and procedures.
  • Attention to detail and organized with ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment
  • Effective communication skills and ability to exchange accurate information.
  • Proficiency in the English language which allows for participation in team meetings, accurate entry of data into company systems and understanding of written directions
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Positive, can-do attitude
  • Personal computer skills, including strong typing ability and proficient use of Microsoft Office

Responsibilities

  • Accurately scan all slides and blocks returned from pathologists at benchmark; Clinical and Anatomic
  • Process other add-on requests in a timely manner including all Antrim changes to original accession number
  • Organizing TRF (Test Request Forms) with samples on grossing trays
  • Sort priority and manifest samples
  • Receiving biopsy samples from other labs and organizing as outlined above
  • Scanning of TRF’s using the scanner; monitoring output to make sure there are no errors in getting these to Transcription
  • Crosstrain and develop knowledge of multiple specialties within department/lab.
  • Consult with senior peers on non-complex tasks to learn through experience.
  • Meet minimum department production goals
  • Identify problems and special handling cases
  • Properly identify, orient, ink, and trim submitted tissues per Standard Operating Procedure and related protocols with utmost quality
  • Produce accurate and legible grossing notes with code description that provide the Pathologist with a clear understanding of the sections taken
  • Prepare tissue into representative sections.
  • Gross examination on large specimens, entire organ submission, digit amputation, jaw resection, eye enucleation, whole brain, and bones.
  • Set-up workstation for Pathologist on duty
  • Reconcile all Antrim pending list for any work completed and release block
  • Perform manual stains as required
  • Exercises judgment in evaluating and reporting results.
  • Report any technical/QC problems to their lead tech or supervisor.
  • Follows applicable Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's), including safety and quality procedures.
  • Maintains clean and organized work area.
  • Restocks supplies as needed.
  • Participates in improving lab efficiency, quality, and cooperation.
  • Performs other duties as assigned
