About The Position

Performs basic histology procedures of processing, embedding, cutting, mounting and staining of tissue specimens for evaluation and diagnosis by pathologists. Provides laboratory support in the areas of quality control, instrument maintenance and validation, specimen reception, preparation and examination. Works to aid other lab technicians, technologists and histologists perform their duties.

  • High School Education/GED or equivalent: Required

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s/Technical Degree or equivalent combination of education/related experience: Preferred
  • Medical Assistant (CMA) certification: Preferred

Responsibilities

  • Collects, identifies labels, logs, bills, and files tissue specimens and slides according to specifications.
  • Ensures histology labs and work areas are kept neat, clean, and stocked.
  • Maintains files for tissue slides/blocks/tissues.
  • Is able to rectify all discrepancies with specimens and documentation on a daily basis, minimizing delays in processing.
  • Assists in preparing and maintaining simple staining solutions.
  • Ensures Reagent expiration dates are checked before staining and secondary containers are properly labeled.
  • Verifies that solutions for processing are changed according to schedule and that all special stains have a positive control.
  • Validates that special stains and IHC logs are documented appropriately.
  • Maintains equipment, cleaning, changing solutions, and replenishing supplies and solutions as needed.
  • Ensures equipment is kept clean after each use.
  • Follows established lab protocols concerning safety issues, demonstrating knowledge by using personal protective equipment, exhaust hoods and other equipment provided for staff safety.
  • Supports and adheres to all company policies and procedures and industry safety standards.
  • Troubleshooting, analyzing, and correcting errors are critical for numbering, billing, and processing/staining complications.
  • Ensures documentation is properly recorded.
  • Receives and accurately logs and identifies surgical specimens, adhering to established departmental protocols for identification and preservation, maintaining accurate specimen identification throughout the accessioning and examination process.
  • Ensures daily tissues are identified, accessioned, IBM'd, logged in PC, processed, embedded, cut, stained, and labeled.
  • Ensures requested special stains, including IHC stains, are completed and documented as soon as possible.
  • Ensures miscellaneous duties are attended to after slides are finished.
  • Records daily Quality Control in established programs.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
