The HIMS Specialist processes continuation-of-care and patient-directed requests for medical information. Duties include providing customer service to walk-ins, opening and processing incoming mail, verifying authorizations, requesting historical medical records, and preparing correspondence in response to requests for medical information. The role requires familiarity with electronic health records (Epic preferred) and a basic understanding of medical terminology; prior release-of-information (ROI) and customer-service experience are preferred. The specialist analyzes patient information for compliance with Federal and State requirements and Joint Commission and CMS standards, coordinates with clinicians to ensure documentation is complete and timely, and follows institutional documentation policies. The role uses independent analytical and critical-thinking skills and works independently and collaboratively across the enterprise with minimal supervision. The specialist accesses only the minimum necessary information, follows privacy and confidentiality rules for protected health information, leverages technology, and communicates professionally in electronic, written, and verbal formats. The position serves patients, care providers, allied health staff, attorneys, insurance companies, government audits, and others courteously and confidentially. This is a primarily remote hybrid position. The employee must reside within 100 miles of a Mayo Clinic campus and relocate to a Mayo Clinic site to meet occasional on-site requirements based on business needs. The position is not eligible for visa sponsorship or transfer.
