By joining our Project Delivery and Preservation Branch II as a Highway Technician Assistant I in Harlan County; you’ll have the opportunity to perform a variety of general labor functions and operate basic automotive and power equipment such as, but not limited to, bushhogs, chainsaws, chemical sprayers, chippers, jackhammers, mowing tractors, single axle truck (dump, flatbed, pickup), snowplow and salt spreader, broom sweepers and weed trimmers.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license to qualify for employment in this job classification.
  • Within 12 months of employment in this job classification, employees in this classification must furnish the agency's appointing authority with documentation that he or she holds a valid Class B commercial driver's license.
  • Within one year of employment in this job classification, the employee must complete First Aid and Snow and Ice Training and must possess Traffic Control/Flagger and OSHA 10 Certifications or equivalent.
  • Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification.
  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States for any employer.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working on rough terrain and in changing climates
  • Basic maintenance or construction experience
  • Eligibility to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License
  • Basic equipment operating experience

Responsibilities

  • Operate dump trucks with snowplow and salt spreader during Snow and Ice season.
  • Operate a tractor-type mowing machine, assist in brush cutting, and use chemical sprayers
  • Flag for operations requiring traffic control.
  • Learn and assist with basic surveying activities on construction projects, maintenance and repair of roadways.
  • Attend required training classes
