About The Position

The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) is seeking a Permanent Highway Maintenance Worker 1 (HMW1) or Highway Technician 1 (HT1) for Hancock County. ODOT is responsible for building and maintaining the nation's 5th largest interstate system and the 2nd largest number of bridges. This role is crucial for ensuring safe and efficient roadways for the people of Ohio. Requirements

  • Formal education in arithmetic that includes addition & subtraction & in reading, writing & speaking common English vocabulary.
  • Valid commercial driver’s license (if involved in driving motorized snow & ice control equipment).
  • Knowledge of addition & subtraction.
  • Knowledge of highway maintenance & traffic control safety practices.
  • Skill in operation of hand tools.
  • Skill in operation of motorized snow equipment.
  • Ability to recognize unusual or threatening conditions & take appropriate action.
  • Ability to read simple sentences.
  • Ability to cooperate with co-workers on group projects.
  • Demonstrate strength to lift 50-100 pounds.

Responsibilities

  • Flags and directs on-going vehicular traffic through highway maintenance and construction sites.
  • Sets up and maintains traffic control structures such as barricades, pot torches, cones, pavement markings, and electrical warning devices.
  • Uses hand tools to perform road repairs, including repairing road shoulders, culverts, and berms, patching potholes, smoothing tar poured into cracks, and doing minor guardrail repair and rough painting.
  • Shovels snow and spreads salt for snow and ice control.
  • Performs general building, grounds, and equipment maintenance, such as mowing lawns, trimming shrubs, sweeping floors, washing windows, removing trash, raking leaves, shoveling sidewalks, and painting structures.
  • Cleans, paints, and refuels equipment.
  • Performs general maintenance and minor repairs of equipment, including fueling and cleaning.
  • Completes daily work records and logs.
  • Operates a 2-way radio and answers the telephone.
  • Rides "shot-gun" during snow and ice season.
  • Drives a truck with snowplow and spreader attachments to perform snow and ice control duties.
