About The Position

The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) is seeking a Highway Maintenance Worker 1 (HMW1) or Highway Technician 1 (HT1) for Hancock County. ODOT is responsible for building and maintaining Ohio's extensive highway system, including the nation's 5th largest interstate system and the 2nd largest number of bridges. Requirements

  • Formal education in arithmetic that includes addition and subtraction.
  • Formal education in reading, writing, and speaking common English vocabulary.
  • Knowledge of addition and subtraction.
  • Knowledge of highway maintenance and traffic control safety practices.
  • Skill in the operation of hand tools.
  • Skill in the operation of motorized snow equipment.
  • Ability to recognize unusual or threatening conditions and take appropriate action.
  • Ability to read simple sentences.
  • Ability to cooperate with co-workers on group projects.
  • Demonstrated strength to lift 50-100 pounds.
  • Valid commercial driver’s license (if involved in driving motorized snow and ice control equipment).

Responsibilities

  • Flags and directs vehicular traffic through highway maintenance and construction sites.
  • Sets up and maintains traffic control structures such as barricades, pot torches, cones, pavement markings, and electrical warning devices.
  • Uses hand tools to perform road repairs, including repairs to road shoulders, culverts, and berms.
  • Patches potholes and smooths tar poured into cracks.
  • Performs minor guardrail repair and rough painting.
  • Shovels snow and spreads salt for snow and ice control.
  • Performs general building, grounds, and equipment maintenance, including mowing lawns, trimming shrubs, sweeping floors, washing windows, removing trash, raking leaves, and shoveling sidewalks.
  • Paints structures.
  • Cleans, paints, and refuels equipment.
  • Performs general maintenance and minor repairs of equipment, such as fueling, cleaning, and making minor adjustments.
  • Completes daily work records and logs.
  • Operates a 2-way radio.
  • Answers the telephone.
  • Rides as a passenger during snow and ice season.
  • Drives a truck equipped with snowplow and spreader attachments for snow and ice control duties.
