About The Position

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is seeking a Highway Maintenance Technician to join our Maintenance Program in Lyman, Wyoming. These roles involve performing various highway maintenance duties to ensure safe travel throughout the region. Technicians will operate equipment, perform road repairs, respond to weather-related conditions, and support the overall mission of WYDOT in all types of seasonal conditions. Lyman is a scenic town nestled at the base of the Uinta Mountains in the heart of Bridger Valley, offering outdoor activities and nearby attractions like the Fort Bridger State Historic Site. Wyoming offers no state income tax. This position offers a $2,000 Hiring Bonus (see eligibility notes) and a comprehensive total compensation package including health, dental, and vision insurance, paid time off, retirement plans, and flexible schedules.

Requirements

  • Must have the ability to obtain water certifications if necessary
  • Must have the ability to obtain a Certification to operate specified equipment as directed by WYDOT
  • Must have the ability to obtain a Certificate of course completion in Defensive Driving
  • Must have the ability to obtain a First Aid/CPR certification
  • Must have the ability to obtain a Flagger certification
  • Knowledge of state highway pavement marking and signing standards
  • Knowledge of state and federal highway safety standards and traffic control procedures
  • Knowledge of equipment maintenance and repair procedures
  • Knowledge of hazardous materials response procedures
  • Knowledge of federal and state requirements for the proper use of personal protective equipment
  • Knowledge of basic equipment operation for single and tandem-axle trucks, loaders, and tractors
  • Knowledge of safe work procedures, First Aid, and CPR, and OSHA Safety Data Sheets for chemicals used in maintenance activities
  • Knowledge of and the ability to utilize basic office equipment such as computers, calculators, and telephones
  • Associate's Degree (typically in Engineering)
  • 0-1 year of relative work experience (typically in Highway Maintenance/Highway Construction)
  • Must have the ability to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License within twelve (12) months of hire OR 2-4 years of relative work experience (typically in Highway Maintenance/Highway Construction)
  • Frequent use of manual and powered hand tools
  • Daily use of motor vehicles and heavy equipment
  • Frequent exposure to hazardous materials
  • Ability to lift and/or carry 50 pounds independently
  • Ability to stand/sit and operate equipment for long periods
  • Work in adverse environmental conditions, which may include, but not be limited to, rain, snow, heat, and hail
  • Ability to walk for long periods on even and uneven ground
  • Working around high-speed traffic and heavy construction equipment
  • Individuals in these positions must be available for emergency work calls at any time, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Individuals in these must report to the department shop within 30 minutes of receiving a call.

Nice To Haves

  • Preference may be given to applicants who have a current Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements prior to employment.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains and operates complex equipment safely and proficiently
  • Assists with training other technicians in the operation and maintenance of equipment
  • Flags traffic and sets up traffic control devices under limited supervision
  • Operates heavy equipment, including single and tandem axle trucks, equipped with an auger, aerial lift equipment, or equipped with plows, wing plows, sanders, and chemical systems to remove snow and ice from the roadway surface
  • Responsible for the rehabilitation of roadway surfaces and/or traffic control devices such as signs and pavement markings
  • Responsible for general maintenance of highway-related facilities such as rest areas, which may include performing water and wastewater treatment according to EPA and DEQ requirements
  • Attends and completes all state and federal training required to obtain/maintain certifications, perform inspections, and learn new skills
  • Communicates information to update others' status and/or process effectiveness
  • Utilizes computers for agency practices, such as training and performance evaluations, and keeps up to date on technological advances with specialized equipment
  • Performs duties involved in removing snow and ice from roadways; determines the effectiveness of treatments and may determine when a change in treatment is necessary
  • Responsible for adhering to all state and federal safety and quality standards, including the correct use of all associated personal protective equipment
