About The Position

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is seeking a Highway Maintenance Specialist I for the Maintenance Program located in Wamsutter, Wyoming. This position involves leading a team and performing various maintenance duties to ensure a safe, high-quality, and efficient transportation system. Requirements

  • Associate's Degree (typically in Engineering) OR 2-4 years of progressive work experience (typically in Highway Maintenance/Highway Construction) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Highway Maintenance Technician
  • 0-2 years of progressive work experience (typically in Highway Maintenance/Highway Construction) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Highway Maintenance Technician
  • Must have the ability to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License within (12) months of hire
  • Frequent use of manual and powered hand tools
  • Daily use of motor vehicles and heavy equipment
  • Frequent exposure to hazardous materials
  • Ability to lift and/or carry 50 pounds independently
  • Ability to stand/sit and operate equipment for long periods of time
  • Work in adverse environmental conditions which may include, but not be limited to rain, snow, heat, and hail
  • Ability to walk long periods on even and uneven ground
  • Working around high-speed traffic and heavy construction equipment
  • Individuals in this classification must be available for emergency work calls at any time, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Individuals must report to the Department Shop within 30 minutes of receiving the call.
  • Individuals in this classification will be subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
  • WYDOT conducts motor vehicle record checks to verify that candidates possess a valid driver's license.
  • Individuals in these positions must pass a pre-employment drug screening and/or physical and will be subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
  • Individuals in these positions must be available for emergency work calls at any time, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Individuals in these positions must report to the department Shop within 30 minutes of receiving a call.
  • Individuals in these positions may be asked to obtain water certifications if necessary.
  • Individuals in these positions must have the ability to successfully complete the following training provided by WYDOT: Certification to operate specified equipment, Defensive Driving, First Aid/CPR certification, and Flagger certification.

Responsibilities

  • Safely operates and trains others to operate complex machinery in specialized maintenance applications
  • Leads the performance of daily maintenance tasks as assigned by the Highway Maintenance Supervisor I; provides regular work direction to the crew
  • Assists with tracking inventory, material usage, labor, and equipment mileage in the supervisor’s absence
  • Provides advice and assistance on repair procedures needed for highways, equipment, and buildings; makes recommendations to the supervisor regarding any unplanned maintenance activities that may be needed
  • Serves as technical resource for the crew; identifies and corrects any maintenance activity not performed according to state and federal safety and/or quality standards
  • Communicates project issues to the supervisor; proposes a new course of action to safely keep the project moving forward
  • Provides input to the supervisor regarding crew performance issues and success observed in the field
  • Operates heavy equipment including, but not limited to: single and tandem axle trucks equipped with an auger, aerial lift equipment, or equipped with plows, wing plows, sanders, and chemical systems to remove snow and ice from roadway surface
  • Responsible for rehabilitation of roadway surfaces and traffic control devices; oversees on-the-road traffic control operations, including oversight of safety procedures and quality standards
  • Attends and completes all state and federal training required in order to obtain/maintain certifications, perform inspections, and learn new skills
  • Utilizes computers for agency practices, such as for training and performance evaluations, and keeps up to date on technological advances with specialized equipment
  • Ability to use computer programs such as email, Word and Excel, and WYDOT reporting programs.
  • Ability to supervise others to schedule daily work activities in a safe work environment.
  • Ability to independently make decisions and use sound judgment daily.
