About The Position

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is committed to providing a safe, high-quality, and efficient transportation system for the people of Wyoming. We are currently seeking a Highway Maintenance Technician for our Maintenance Program located in Casper, Wyoming. As a Highway Maintenance Technician, you will perform a variety of roadway maintenance duties—under limited supervision—to help keep Wyoming’s transportation system safe and reliable for the traveling public. Requirements

  • Must have the ability to obtain water certifications if necessary.
  • Must have the ability to obtain a Certification to operate specified equipment as directed by WYDOT.
  • Must have the ability to obtain a Certificate of course completion in Defensive Driving.
  • Must have the ability to obtain a First Aid/CPR certification.
  • Must have the ability to obtain a Flagger certification.
  • Knowledge of state highway pavement marking and signing standards
  • Knowledge of state and federal highway safety standards and traffic control procedures
  • Knowledge of equipment maintenance and repair procedures.
  • Knowledge of hazardous materials response procedures
  • Knowledge of federal and state requirements for the proper use of personal protective equipment
  • Knowledge of basic equipment operation for single and tandem axle trucks, loaders, and tractors
  • Knowledge of safe work procedures, First Aid and CPR, and OSHA Safety Data Sheets for chemicals used in maintenance activities
  • Knowledge of and the ability to utilize basic office equipment such as computers, calculators, and telephones
  • 2-4 years of relevant work experience (typically in Highway Maintenance/Highway Construction)
  • Must have the ability to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License within twelve (12) months of hire OR Associate's Degree (typically in Engineering)
  • 0-1 year of relative work experience (typically in Highway Maintenance/Highway Construction)
  • Must have the ability to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License within twelve (12) months of hire
  • Frequent use of manual and powered hand tools
  • Daily use of motor vehicles and heavy equipment
  • Frequent exposure to hazardous materials
  • Ability to lift and/or carry 50 pounds independently
  • Ability to stand/sit and operate equipment for long periods
  • Work in adverse environmental conditions, which may include but not be limited to rain, snow, heat, and hail
  • Ability to walk long periods on even and uneven ground
  • Working around high-speed traffic and heavy construction equipment
  • Individuals in these positions must be available for emergency work calls at any time, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Individuals must report to the department Shop within 30 minutes of receiving a call.

Nice To Haves

  • Current Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements prior to employment.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains and operates complex equipment safely and proficiently
  • Assists with training other technicians in the operation and maintenance of equipment
  • Under limited supervision, flags traffic and sets up traffic control devices
  • Operates heavy equipment, including, but not limited to: single and tandem axle trucks, equipped with an auger, aerial lift equipment, or equipped with plows, wing plows, sanders, and chemical systems to remove snow and ice from roadway surface
  • Responsible for the rehabilitation of roadway surfaces and/or traffic control devices such as signs and pavement markings
  • Responsible for general maintenance of highway-related facilities such as rest areas; this may include performing water and wastewater treatment according to EPA and DEQ requirements
  • Attends and completes all state and federal training required to obtain/maintain certifications, perform inspections, and learn new skills
  • Communicates information in order to update others' status and/or process effectiveness
  • Utilizes computers for agency practices, such as for training and performance evaluations, and keeps up to date on technological advances with specialized equipment
  • Performs duties involved in removing snow and ice from roadways; determines the effectiveness of treatments and may determine when a change in treatment is necessary
  • Responsible for adhering to all state and federal safety and quality standards, including the correct use of all associated personal protective equipment
