Highway Heavy Equipment Mechanic
About The Position
The Highway Heavy Equipment Mechanic performs essential maintenance, repair, and rebuilding of cars, trucks, and heavy equipment to ensure the INDOT fleet operates safely and efficiently. This role involves diagnosing mechanical issues, conducting major and minor repairs, servicing equipment in the field, and supporting winter operations such as snowplow setup and ice removal. The position requires maintaining EMS records, ordering parts, and providing emergency roadside assistance. Technicians collaborate with the Shop Foreman, attend required training, and adhere to strict safety and mechanical procedures.
Requirements
- Must possess a valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or obtain one within the first 90 days of employment
- Thorough knowledge of automobile functions, systems, and repairs
- Thorough knowledge of diagnostic equipment
- Thorough knowledge of appropriate safety precautions
- High School Diploma or High School Equivalent (HSE) diploma
- At least 1+ years of experience in a similar role
Responsibilities
- Rebuild, replace, and/or repair major parts on cars and light trucks, heavy-duty trucks, and heavy equipment
- Perform minor repairs such as adjusting valves, changing tires, and cleaning diesel injectors
- Install snowplow blades and repair damaged plow assemblies
- Perform minor body repair work
- Maintain Equipment Management System (EMS) records on parts used and work performed
- Service and repair highway equipment in the field and use welding equipment
- Diagnose performance issues for gas and diesel engines
- Inspect vehicles/equipment for damage
- Perform winter operations duties including snow and ice removal
- Operate snowplows and tow trucks
- Perform emergency service calls on the roadside
- Attend training schools and safety meetings
- Coordinate work assigned by the Shop Foreman
