About The Position

The High School Manufacturing Youth Apprentice will work alongside Production Associates to gain hands-on experience in a manufacturing environment while supporting safe, efficient operations and the production of high-quality products. Through on-the-job and technical training, the Manufacturing Youth Apprentice will develop foundational skills in safety, teamwork, equipment operation, quality, problem-solving, and continuous improvement.

Requirements

  • Current high school junior graduating in May/June 2028 and enrolled in a Racine Unified School District high school, St. Catherine’s High School, or Racine Lutheran High School.
  • On track for high school graduation and eligible to participate in the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development (DWD) Youth Apprenticeship Program.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Ability to complete assigned work independently with appropriate supervision and direction.
  • Willingness and ability to learn, solve problems, think critically, and adapt to a variety of tasks and processes.
  • Process-oriented mindset with strong attention to detail.
  • Must be available to participate in the program from June 2027 through June 2028.
  • Must be available to work 40 hours per week during the summer and approximately 20 hours per week during the school year, with scheduling flexibility based on school requirements.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from the work location each scheduled workday.
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position and tolerate the ergonomic demands of the role. This includes lifting up to 40 pounds and standing, sitting, walking, bending, climbing stairs, kneeling, reaching overhead, pushing, and pulling for the duration of the scheduled workday.

Nice To Haves

  • Basic math, measurement, and hand tool skills.
  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Basic understanding of safety, health, and environmental principles and practices.
  • Previous technical coursework or training related to mechanical, industrial, manufacturing, or production environments.
  • Mechanical aptitude.
  • 2.5 GPA or higher preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Train on, set up, and operate low-tech sorting, assembly, packing, and general manufacturing equipment as appropriate and trained.
  • Follow all safety requirements, standard work, and standard operating procedures, including performing safety checks and properly using safety processes and devices as required and trained.
  • Participate in required safety activities, including Behavioral Based Safety and risk predictions.
  • Monitor equipment, identify abnormalities or operating issues, and escalate concerns as appropriate.
  • Apply basic problem-solving and troubleshooting principles within the scope of training provided.
  • Support equipment maintenance, including cleaning, inspecting, lubricating, and assisting with autonomous and planned/preventive maintenance activities as trained.
  • Support efforts to maximize equipment uptime, improve efficiency, and reduce scrap.
  • Perform quality checks and audits, identify product deviations, and follow established processes to correct or escalate issues as appropriate.
  • Accurately complete required production, quality, safety, and systems documentation.
  • Complete assigned technical training requirements within established timeframes.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment in accordance with SC Johnson policies and procedures.
  • Work collaboratively with team members and cross-functional partners while completing assigned tasks with appropriate supervision and direction.
  • Demonstrate a willingness to learn, receive feedback, develop new skills, and adapt to various assignments based on business needs and training.
  • Demonstrate a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and positive contributions to the team in alignment with SC Johnson principles.
  • Train on, operate, and mechanically or systematically intervene with various types of low-tech packaging equipment as appropriate and trained.
  • Prepare complete and accurate systems records and apply basic problem-solving principles.
  • Make appropriate judgments to determine actions needed when direct or indirect intervention is required for equipment settings or equipment malfunctions, within the scope of training provided.
  • Clean, inspect, and lubricate equipment; identify and correct abnormalities; and assist with autonomous maintenance (AM) and planned maintenance (PM) activities as appropriate and trained.
  • Follow all safety rules and guidelines and participate in required safety activities, including the Behavioral Based Safety process and risk predictions.
  • Support the production of quality products by utilizing various tools, testing, and auditing systems to document that products meet or exceed established quality standards.
  • Work independently with appropriate supervision and collaboratively in both small and large group settings, including participating constructively in team meetings and team-based decision-making.
  • Demonstrate a willingness and ability to develop new skills, share knowledge with others, and take responsibility for assigned aspects of equipment and operations.
  • Demonstrate a strong work ethic and attention to detail while contributing positively to the success of the team.
