Uncommon High School Spanish teachers work in grade-level and content teams to help students become global citizens. Teachers develop expertise in their course content and motivate and inspire high school students. Spanish is used throughout classes, with a variety of instructional strategies supporting a safe environment for students to express themselves in a new language. The curriculum prepares students for academic autonomy, college-preparatory work, and Advanced Placement and collegiate-level coursework. Teachers build students’ reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills; confidence using authentic print and audio sources; conversational ability; and cultural awareness. They also collaborate with the Spanish department and grade-level teams, analyze student work and assessment trends with school leaders, differentiate instruction, build relationships with families, and participate in coaching, professional development, and school-wide meetings. Uncommon Schools is a nonprofit network of high-performing public charter schools serving economically disadvantaged communities in Boston, Camden, New York City, Newark, and Rochester. The organization offers educator coaching, feedback, and professional development and is committed to closing the college completion gap and preparing students for college and beyond.
