About The Position

East Harlem Scholars Academies are seeking a Performing Arts (Theatre) Teacher to join their team. This role is student-facing and involves working closely with grade teams and the instructional leadership team to develop and implement curriculum, provide high-quality instruction, track student progress, and foster a positive classroom and school culture. The teacher will also act as a class advisor, providing mentorship and support to high school students. The goal is to prepare students with the skills, character, and well-being to excel academically, lead in their communities, and realize their full potential. The organization is committed to anti-racism work and racial equity, preparing scholars to effect change and thrive in the world.

Requirements

  • Expertise in theatre arts at the high school level or above.
  • A Bachelor’s Degree or higher.
  • Hold yourself to high professional and ethical standards.
  • Experience with or excitement about researching best practices in anti-racist pedagogy.
  • Enjoy and/or have experience working with diverse populations of students and communities.
  • Belief that every student can and will learn when provided with a quality education.
  • Demonstrated success in raising the achievement levels of students who historically have not had equitable access to education opportunities.
  • Willingness to be flexible in your role and adapt to school and student needs.
  • Commitment to continuous improvement and learning through professional development.
  • A minimum of two years of experience in relevant educational positions.

Responsibilities

  • Provide high-quality instruction in performing arts (theatre).
  • Internalize and potentially develop curriculum in collaboration with grade teams and the instructional leadership team.
  • Track and measure student progress.
  • Create a positive classroom and school culture.
  • Engage in reflection and continuous improvement.
  • Act as a class advisor for 10-15 students, providing mentorship and support.
  • Motivate students across academic skill levels.
  • Cultivate students’ social-emotional awareness and well-being.
  • Embody and model core values for students.
  • Set ambitious goals based on backwards planning and aligned with an overall vision for student success.
  • Demonstrate deep knowledge of content and effective pedagogy.
  • Set clear expectations and institute routines to establish and maintain a purposeful, supportive, and fun learning environment.
  • Build a classroom community where restorative practices are actively modeled and used.
  • Make proactive contributions to the community.
  • Advance practice through reflection, development opportunities, and participation in the professional community.
  • Actively engage families and community members.
