About The Position

At AECOM, we are dedicated to delivering a better world through infrastructure projects that improve commutes, provide clean water, keep the lights on, and transform skylines. As a trusted infrastructure consulting firm, we partner with clients to solve complex challenges and build legacies for future generations. This High School Intern position is based in AECOM's offices in Downtown Los Angeles or the City of Orange. The internship is scheduled from mid-June 2025 to August 2025, with varying hours during the summer. Students will gain hands-on practical experience through assignments tailored to their specific interests, exposing them to a wide array of professions within the design and construction industry. The program emphasizes learning through diverse activities with mentors representing various disciplines.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in high school or spring 2026 high school graduate.
  • Must have completed two years of study (rising Junior or above).

Nice To Haves

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Interest in the AEC (Architecture – Engineering – Construction) fields or in the Built Environment.

Responsibilities

  • Students will spend time shadowing various disciplines – architects/designers, building engineers, scientists, project managers, construction personnel, economists, environmental engineers, cost estimators, and business/ management (marketing, legal, financial) to learn about each discipline. This will be both virtual and in-person.
  • Students will shadow BIM technicians, project engineers, field engineers, and AECOM’s Digital Technology group to learn about the technological side of construction, including introductory or even advanced training in relevant software.
  • After the necessary safety training, students will tour project construction sites, take photos of work in progress to compile visual documentation of the project and complete site observation reports.
  • Students will shadow Project Managers and take minutes for various meetings.
  • Students will spend time with trade/material vendors, and help the architects and designers update materials libraries and collections.
  • Students will complete First Aid Certification and Occupational Safety Health Administration (OSHA) 10 Certification.
  • Students will learn how to read plans and organize a construction drawing set. They are taught to update plans for projects in construction, with RFIs and revisions to keep a current set.
  • Students will have access to AECOM University, which provides over 5,000 AECOM courses to explore technical topics.
