Uncommon High School History teachers work in department teams to help students become self-guided learners. Teachers develop expertise in their course content and motivate and inspire high school students. History classes empower students’ voices and develop them as global citizens through textual analysis, analytical writing, and discourse. By the end of high school, students are prepared for academic autonomy and college-preparatory work. Teachers deliver a curriculum focused on World History, US History, American Government, and Economics, preparing students for Advanced Placement and collegiate-level coursework. They facilitate student-led discussions and debates, guide students in analyzing primary and secondary sources, and build an inclusive, safe classroom where students can express evidence-based perspectives. The role also includes reviewing student work and assessment data, differentiating instruction, collaborating with colleagues and families, and participating in coaching, professional development, and school-wide meetings. A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university is required before employment begins. Certification is not required for hiring, but teachers must meet New York State certification eligibility requirements and become certified within a reasonable period after starting. If a teacher does not have a degree in education, they must enroll in a teacher preparation program and maintain at least a 2.5 GPA during employment.
