About The Position

Under the supervision of the Principal, the Assistant Principal will lead the students, faculty, and staff to create and maintain a positive environment for teaching and learning. This role involves assisting the principal in administering the educational program, developing and implementing the school's strategic plan, and providing leadership for educational programs, including curricular and extracurricular activities. The Assistant Principal will also focus on fostering a positive, safe, and respectful environment for all students, staff, and parents, supervising and evaluating staff, assessing student learning, and managing schedules and student conduct.

Requirements

  • Successful experience as a certified teacher at the elementary, middle, and/or secondary level.
  • Certified as an intermediate supervisor (#092) in Connecticut.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of best practices in instruction, curriculum, and assessment that promotes continual improvement of student learning and the professional development of staff.
  • Experience with and knowledge of data-driven instruction and decision-making.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with all staff, other administrators, and parents.
  • Demonstrated ability to problem solve and reach consensus.
  • A minimum of three years as a building level or district level administrator.
  • Strong written and oral communications skills.
  • An understanding of systems thinking and its implication for change and improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Assists principal in providing leadership and supervision in administering the educational program of the school in accordance with the Board of Education policies, administrative procedures, rules and regulations, and applicable law.
  • Assists in the development, implementation, and monitoring of the school strategic plan.
  • Assists in the development and administration of schools programs consistent with school district goals and objectives.
  • Provides leadership and direction to staff with regard to the implementation, ongoing evaluation and improvement of educational programs, including curricular and extracurricular activities.
  • Assists in organizing, supporting and fostering a positive, safe environment that is conducive to best meeting the needs of all students, staff, and parents/guardians.
  • Seeks ways to develop and sustain a climate of mutual respect between and among the students and adults.
  • Fosters teamwork between teachers and among staff and parents.
  • Supervises and evaluates certified and non-certified staff in accordance with the school district’s evaluation plans.
  • Conducts ongoing assessment of student learning, and works with teaching staff to modify instructional methods to fit students’ needs, including students with special needs.
  • Participates in and chairs as needed Planning and Placement Team meetings, Student Assistance Team meetings, and/or 504 meetings.
  • Prepares master schedules, student/class schedules, duty schedules, testing schedules, assembly schedules, etc.
  • Ensures that student conduct and attendance conform with Board policies and procedures, and are implemented and followed at school and school sponsored events.
  • Assists to define and disseminate information about school disciplinary policies and procedures to parents, students, staff, and community.
  • Conferences with students referred for disciplinary and/or academic violations, administers disciplinary action as necessary, and notifies parents/guardians of action taken.
  • Encourages parental involvement in students’ education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.
  • Assists with the recruitment, screening, and hiring of school personnel.
  • Assists in the budgetary and financial affairs of the school.
  • Attends and supervises after-school, evening, and weekend sponsored events and activities as assigned.
