About The Position

The Helper Cook learns to assist with preparing and cooking various food items before becoming a qualified, skilled cook. The role maintains food safety and sanitation standards in preparation and kitchen areas and serves customers and coworkers courteously and efficiently. This is a full-time position at Monroe College in the Bronx, New York. The schedule is afternoons, with days and hours that may vary. Prior cooking experience is required. Pay ranges from $19.50 to $40.00 per hour.

Responsibilities

• Learn to read menus and estimate food requirements; order food from suppliers or retrieve it from storage.
• Prepare and cook food according to company production records and standardized recipes.
• Learn to adjust temperature controls on ovens, broilers, grills, roasters, and steam kettles.
• Measure and mix ingredients according to recipes using kitchen utensils and equipment.
• Bake, roast, broil, and steam meats, fish, vegetables, and other foods under guidance; season food under others’ instruction.
• Test food by tasting, smelling, and piercing to determine whether it is cooked.
• Carve meat, portion food onto serving plates, and add gravies, sauces, and garnishes as directed.
• Wash, peel, cut, and shred fruits and vegetables.
• Butcher chicken, fish, and shellfish as directed.
• Bake bread, rolls, cakes, and pastries as instruction permits.
• Maintain the work area and equipment, following sanitation and safety principles when handling food and equipment.
• Interact with customers and coworkers in a courteous, efficient, and friendly manner.
• Comply with company service standards and inventory and cash control procedures.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
