About The Position

Performs semi-skilled work in lubricating, fueling, and servicing heavy construction equipment, automobiles, trucks, tractors, and other motorized and mechanical equipment at the Landfill and Recycling. Also responsible for the inspection and fueling of back-up generators for various departments throughout Hall County. Picks up and delivers parts and supplies for the Landfill Shop. Operates a pick-up truck to pick up and deliver equipment parts, tires, and other supplies, making out-of-town trips when necessary. Assists mechanics with manual and semi-skilled tasks in repairing and maintaining automotive equipment, including greasing and lubricating vehicles, changing oil and filters, changing air filters, changing tires, and checking and filling transmission and brake fluids. Ensures equipment is running properly by starting and testing operation, and pulling pans and making minor adjustments as required. Maintains records of individual machines and charts services performed. Ensures safety is maintained through proper training and use of PPE. Maintains and cleans the shop area daily, including floors and the fluid containment area. Maintains safety guards around shop machinery and the lube pit. Ensures shop and related buildings are locked and alarms are set at the end of the day. Performs other relevant work as assigned. Regular and predictable attendance is required.

Requirements

  • High School or vocational school diploma or G.E.D. supplemented with coursework in auto mechanics.
  • One year experience in heavy construction equipment maintenance.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the minimum level of qualifications stated above.
  • Valid Class A or B Driver’s License with Hazmat endorsement and a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
  • Knowledge of geography of the County, including major streets and landmarks.
  • Knowledge of and ability to perform automotive and heavy equipment repair and maintenance.
  • Skill in using hand tools.
  • Ability to follow both oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to lift objects up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to perform strenuous and routine work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Incumbents must continuously be able to think analytically; handle stress and emotion, concentrate on tasks, remember names and other details; examine and observe details; make decisions, and adjust to change.
  • Incumbents must also continuously direct others; meet deadlines; stay organized; use math/calculations and use a keyboard/type.
  • Tasks require the ability to exert physical effort in strenuous and routine work which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate to heavy weight (25-100) pounds.
  • Duties require the ability to operate a motor vehicle and various hand tools.
  • Essential functions frequently require the ability to move about inside the office; and move/transport items up to 50lbs.
  • Essential functions occasionally require the ability to bend body downward and forward by bending spine and legs, and twisting at the waist, hips or knees; reach overhead; push or pull; and repetitively use hands/arms/legs.
  • Essential functions regularly require the ability to use effective verbal and written communication; and use of hand/eye coordination and fine manipulation to use equipment.
  • Tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

  • Incumbents in this position are occasionally required to be on-call and work irregular hours.
