About The Position

Under general supervision, is responsible for serving as the initial point of contact with City employees whose trucks, equipment, and vehicles experience performance/mechanical problems requiring service. Coordinates and monitors all repairs and ensures quality workmanship is performed. Working conditions are primarily in an outside or shop environment with frequent exposure to temperature extremes, dust, damp/wet surfaces, high noise levels, oily surfaces, and hazardous heavy equipment. May require shift work, weekends, nights, and holidays. Exercises functional supervision over assigned staff.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency).
  • Six (6) years of experience as a heavy equipment mechanic.
  • Must possess a Texas Class "A" Driver's License (CDL) or obtain within 90 days of employment.
  • Ability to utilize hand tools, power tools and equipment used in automotive, and truck repair.
  • Ability to organize preventive maintenance and mechanical repair work based on information gathered from operator or department.
  • Ability to use Fleet Management/Work order system.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff and the general public.
  • Ability to perform all the physical requirements of the position, with or without accommodations.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience as a government fleet or dealership service advisor preferred.
  • One (1) year of progressively responsible experience in a team lead role, demonstrating leadership, accountability, and the ability to coordinate multiple priorities in a fast paced work environment.
  • Experience preparing daily, weekly, or monthly operational reports related to maintenance activities, equipment availability, or repair status.
  • Experience coordinating repairs between technicians, parts personnel, vendors, and customers to ensure timely completion of work.
  • Prior experience utilizing a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) to create, update, and track repair orders.

Responsibilities

  • Greets incoming customers/vehicle operators at entrance of repair facility; assists in the preparation or review of driver's report; and opens work order.
  • Determines the need and extent of repairs and service to vehicles by road test, use of diagnostic devices, visual inspection of vehicle, or questioning of drivers about performance problems.
  • Assists mechanics in logging on and off of computers (work order system), updates vehicle repair status, and closes out work orders.
  • Maintains daily availability logs.
  • Coordinates and maintains parts inventory.
  • Monitors the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and other safety equipment by all personnel on the shop floor.
  • Serves as lead mechanic in absence of supervisor; assigns and reviews completed work.
  • Assists supervisor in the coordination of the Preventive Maintenance Program.
  • Contacts vendors that are servicing vehicles for status updates and coordinates pick-up.
  • Ensures that vendors have repaired vehicles to specifications.
  • Monitors vehicles throughout the repair process and provides updates to departments as needed; test drives vehicles and notifies customers when repairs are completed.
  • Resolves customer complaints and provides quality customer service.
  • Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.
