About The Position

This is the first of two levels in the Equipment Operations-Heavy series. The incumbent operates and maintains vehicles and heavy or specialized equipment, some of which may require a Commercial Driver's License or another specialized operator's license. The role may involve operating a Gradall excavator/track hoe, herbicide truck, pothole patcher, dozer, grappler truck, motor grader, jet vac truck, or large low boy truck. Duties also include equipment inspections and routine maintenance, transporting and handling materials, traffic control, and related manual labor. The employee directs work-zone or other traffic-control setup at job sites in accordance with MUTCD or other generally accepted standards. This position has no supervisory responsibilities. A uniform is supplied by the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury, and the employee is responsible for complying with the Police Jury's Uniform Agreement.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED and one year of proficiency using and operating qualifying equipment designated by the department, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Recognized training certification and ability to safely operate one or more pieces of qualifying equipment.
Valid driver's license as required by state law.
Public Works or other recognized training certification on qualifying equipment.
Commercial Driver's License with class and endorsements designated according to equipment assignment.
Knowledge of heavy and specialized equipment and vehicles, manual labor practices, equipment maintenance and repair, occupational hazards, safe work methods, safe driving practices, applicable traffic laws, ordinances and rules, MUTCD, and safe work-zone setup.
Skills in operating motor vehicles and applicable equipment; performing preventive maintenance; maintaining records; conducting vehicle inspections and recognizing defects; performing manual labor; and communicating effectively with coworkers, supervisors, and the public.

Responsibilities

Operate heavy, specialized equipment, which may include Gradalls, bucket trucks, low boys, and other related equipment.
Inspect, maintain, and perform basic repairs on equipment.
Perform manual labor, including loading and unloading shipments, flagging traffic, assembling structures, and picking up debris.
Drive and operate commercial trucks, maintenance equipment, or other motorized vehicles to transport shipments, perform grounds maintenance, or complete related duties.
Direct work-zone or other traffic-control setup at job sites in accordance with MUTCD or other generally accepted standards.
Perform other duties of a similar nature or level.
