Landfill Heavy Equipment Operator
About The Position
The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for safely operating heavy equipment at a recycling center, landfill, or transfer station to transfer, spread, cover, load, and/or compact waste or soil efficiently and safely. Equipment may include forklifts, excavators, bulldozers, front-end loaders, and other equipment. The operator inspects equipment before and after operation, monitors waste for unacceptable materials, and monitors equipment condition to maintain operational readiness and minimize downtime. The role includes cleaning equipment tracks or wheels as needed, performing and documenting minor service, reporting more complex mechanical issues to the Maintenance Shop, completing equipment condition and other reports, following safety policies and procedures, and ensuring the shop is clean, serviced, and stored at the end of each shift. Other job-related duties may be assigned.
Requirements
- Two years of prior related experience in heavy equipment operation.
- One year of prior experience working at sites regulated by OSHA.
- Good customer service skills and a professional, courteous, cooperative, honest, and trustworthy approach with customers and coworkers.
- Good time-management skills to complete assigned responsibilities efficiently and safely.
- Ability to follow through, adhere to the work schedule, and address challenges as they arise.
- Ability to follow company policies and rules, promote safety standards, and avoid inappropriate risks.
- Pride in work and commitment to achieving goals.
Responsibilities
- Inspect equipment before and after operation according to company policy, ensuring windows, lights, mirrors, and rear-view cameras are clean.
- Safely and efficiently operate equipment such as forklifts, excavators, bulldozers, and front-end loaders using proper safety standards.
- Monitor waste continuously for evidence of unacceptable materials.
- Monitor equipment condition to ensure operational readiness and minimize downtime; clean tracks or wheels as needed.
- Perform and document minor equipment service and refer more complicated mechanical issues to the Maintenance Shop.
- Complete Equipment Condition Reports and other required reports; report necessary repairs to a supervisor.
- Follow all required safety policies and procedures.
- Ensure the shop is clean, serviced, and stored at the completion of each shift.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
