About The Position

The City of Chattanooga is seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator for Sewer Maintenance. This role is crucial for advancing projects related to the construction and maintenance of city streets, utilities, and other infrastructure. The position involves operating heavy equipment to perform tasks such as digging, moving earth and materials, grading, loading, and paving. The operator will be responsible for ensuring the safety of themselves, other workers, the equipment, and the public while maneuvering in various environments, including public roads and work sites with obstacles. The role also includes assisting in the maintenance of landfills, operating paving machines, and performing basic labor tasks. Additionally, the operator will be responsible for light maintenance of equipment, ensuring proper securing of loads, and maintaining a safe work environment free from hazardous organisms. This position is deemed essential during inclement weather.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Three (3) years of any combination of relevant education, experience, and/or training sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
  • Valid Class D driver’s license.
  • Demonstrated proficiency on a minimum of three (3) types of heavy equipment.
  • Three (3) years of experience operating heavy equipment.
  • Must be able to use electronic devices to receive and track work.
  • Must be customer service centered, focused, and able to recognize or resolve customer needs according to departmental practices.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience operating excavators, rubber-tired loaders, compactor, scraper, wood chipper, paving machine, milling machine, motor grader, bulldozer, articulated dump truck, and backhoes.

Responsibilities

  • Maneuver heavy equipment and operate complex mechanisms involving digging, moving earth and materials, grading, loading, paving, and performing similar tasks to advance projects relating to construction and maintenance of city streets, utilities, and other infrastructure.
  • Operate various heavy equipment to assist in the maintenance and upkeep of the landfill, including operating a bulldozer, compactor, and/or scraper to move and compact waste and materials.
  • Operate milling and asphalt paving machines to grind existing pavement and lay down new pavement for roads, parking lots, and other paved surfaces.
  • Perform basic and semi-skilled labor to assist in the completion of maintenance, upkeep, and construction projects.
  • Use, carry, and answer cell phones, use other electronic devices to receive and track work, and/or two-way radio as determined by job duties and supervisor.
  • Maintain good interpersonal relationships with staff, co-workers, managers, and citizens.
  • Perform light maintenance of equipment, such as greasing, blowing out air filters, keeping motors clear of debris, ensuring fluids are at manufacturer's specifications, and maintaining updated maintenance records.
  • Assist crew supervisor/crew members with loading and unloading equipment/other materials onto trucks and trailers, ensuring loads are properly and evenly secured.
  • Keep the sewer department free of hazardous sewer organisms.
  • Ensure that job layouts do not affect the quality of work done.
  • Assist truck drivers with materials and equipment on a daily basis.
