About The Position

This classification performs the repair, overhaul, maintenance, and servicing of construction and other heavy equipment. It also includes work on other mobile equipment, such as car pool vehicles, and repair and maintenance on small engines like lawnmowers, snowblowers, and pumps. The role operates under the supervision of the Shop Foreman and may provide lead worker responsibility for lower-classified positions.

Requirements

  • Five years of equipment mechanic experience or a satisfactory combination of experience and training.
  • Possession of a valid class A CDL with an acceptable driving record per the County’s vehicle policy.
  • Thorough knowledge of general mechanics, heavy equipment mechanics, and the proper uses and capabilities of tools.
  • Skill in operating a welder, drill press, metal saw, disc sander, electric hoist, hydraulic press, and all material tools.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.

Responsibilities

  • Repairs heavy-duty diesel trucks, front-end loaders, motor graders, truck-type tractors, and other off-road equipment used in road construction or bridge building.
  • Performs major or minor repairs on engines, transmissions, drive chains, and hydraulic systems.
  • Conducts major overhauls on heavy equipment.
  • Evaluates equipment condition and recommends repair strategies to the shop foreman, considering shop capabilities, manpower, and equipment availability.
  • Performs welding and cutting, and some rebuilding and prefabrication.
  • Performs general overhaul, maintenance, and repair of machinery and construction equipment.
  • Completes shop work in accordance with work orders, maintaining records of job costs (labor and materials) according to the Chart of Accounts.
  • Ensures good housekeeping in the work area and observes all safety rules and regulations.
  • Performs work in the safest and most efficient manner.
  • Schedules work according to the shop foreman's plans.
  • Performs maintenance and tune-ups to assist in the servicing area as needed.
  • Performs varied duties, either independently or under supervision, on all work brought to the shop.
