About The Position

McGrew Auction Company is seeking an experienced and dependable Heavy Equipment Inspector and Mechanic to join our team. This position plays a critical role in ensuring that construction and agricultural equipment is thoroughly inspected, accurately evaluated, and properly documented prior to listing and sale. The ideal candidate has strong hands-on experience working with heavy equipment, a solid mechanical background, and the ability to identify mechanical, operational, and safety concerns through both inspection and equipment operation. This position will also perform hands-on maintenance and mechanical repairs to prepare equipment for sale and address issues identified during the inspection process. We buy, sell, trade, and ship used equipment worldwide, offering a diverse inventory of agricultural and construction equipment and connecting buyers and sellers across the country. We conduct virtual sales, online-only auctions, onsite and offsite auctions, dealer and office-run sales, and complete liquidations. McGrew hosts bi-weekly live onsite Construction, and Agricultural auctions, along with a variety of online-only and specialty auctions throughout the year. McGrew Auction Company is seeking an experienced and dependable Heavy Equipment Inspector and Mechanic to join our team. This position is primarily responsible for inspecting, evaluating, and documenting the condition of construction and agricultural heavy equipment prior to listing and sale. The ideal candidate will have strong hands-on mechanical experience with heavy equipment and the ability to recognize mechanical, operational, and safety concerns through both visual inspection and equipment operation. The employee will also perform hands-on mechanical service, maintenance, and repairs to prepare equipment for inspection, listing, and sale. This may include routine maintenance and repairs such as replacing batteries, hoses, belts, filters, fluids, and other components, as well as addressing mechanical issues identified during the inspection process. This is a hands-on position for someone who understands heavy equipment and can use their mechanical experience to accurately determine the condition of a machine. The position requires an individual who can work independently, make sound judgments, accurately document findings, and recognize when a repair requires additional expertise or resources.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent
Minimum of three (3) years of hands-on experience working with construction and/or agricultural heavy equipment required.
Demonstrated mechanical experience with heavy equipment required.
Strong understanding of heavy equipment operation, mechanical systems, and common equipment components.
Ability to accurately identify mechanical wear, damage, leaks, operational concerns, and other equipment deficiencies.
Ability to perform routine maintenance and mechanical repairs on heavy equipment.
Ability to safely operate and work around construction and agricultural equipment.
Valid driver's license required.
Strong attention to detail and ability to accurately document inspection findings.
Ability to work independently and make sound judgments regarding equipment condition.

Nice To Haves

Five (5) or more years of experience working as a heavy equipment mechanic, technician, inspector, or similar role.
Experience with construction and agricultural equipment.
Experience with diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and mechanical components.
Experience inspecting equipment for an auction, dealership, rental company, fleet, or similar operation.
Experience operating a variety of construction and agricultural equipment.
Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
Ability to recognize when equipment requires additional diagnostic or repair expertise.

Responsibilities

Conduct thorough hands-on inspections of construction and agricultural heavy equipment, including excavators, skid steers, loaders, tractors, and similar machinery.
Operate equipment as necessary to evaluate functionality and performance.
Evaluate the mechanical, operational, and visual condition of equipment.
Identify mechanical wear, damage, leaks, deficiencies, missing components, and other issues that may affect equipment condition, value, safety, or performance.
Use hands-on mechanical knowledge and experience to assess the condition of equipment and its major components.
Identify issues that may not be readily apparent through a visual inspection alone.
Accurately document inspection findings, equipment specifications, deficiencies, and notable issues using company systems.
Ensure inspection information accurately reflects the condition of equipment being prepared for listing and sale.
Communicate significant mechanical, operational, or safety concerns to management and the appropriate service personnel.
Assist with preparing equipment for photographs, listings, and auction.
Perform routine maintenance, service, and mechanical repairs on construction and agricultural heavy equipment.
Replace batteries, hoses, belts, filters, fluids, and other equipment components as needed.
Perform lubrication and other preventative maintenance.
Address basic and intermediate mechanical issues identified during inspections.
Perform minor to moderate mechanical repairs within the employee's training, experience, and skill level.
Assist with troubleshooting mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and other equipment concerns.
Prepare equipment to be safe, functional, and ready for inspection and sale.
Recognize when equipment requires more advanced diagnostics, specialized repairs, or additional resources and communicate those needs appropriately.
Maintain tools and service equipment in a clean, safe, and organized condition.
Safely assist with loading, unloading, moving, and staging heavy equipment.
Operate equipment as needed for inspection, maintenance, staging, and auction preparation.
Assist with maintaining an organized and safe equipment yard.
Work closely with the yard, sales, and service teams to ensure equipment is properly prepared for sale.
Follow all company safety procedures and operational standards.
Perform other duties as assigned.
