About The Position

Regions Hospital is seeking a friendly, organized, and adaptable Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) to join the Observation unit. This unit is a med-surg/telemetry unit specializing in short stay medical-surgical observation and extended recovery patients, including those from general surgery, acute care surgery, neurosurgery, urology, cardiac telemetry, and post procedural care. New hires will receive one to two weeks of training on the electronic health system to ensure effective use. The HUC role involves utilizing communication and critical-thinking skills to support nursing staff and create a welcoming environment for patients and visitors. As the first point of contact on the unit, the HUC is responsible for providing exceptional customer service through welcoming behaviors, effective communication, and information sharing. Additionally, the position performs clerical and receptionist functions, such as organizing and maintaining unit supplies, preparing and maintaining patient records, performing data entry into the electronic system, acting as a resource for medical staff regarding hospital protocols, and facilitating communication among staff, patients, families, care providers, and other hospital departments. This role operates under the supervision of the nurse manager/charge nurse.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 1 year clerical or healthcare experience or recent (within 1 year) graduate of a clerical/healthcare training program
  • Skill and ability to demonstrate exceptional customer service
  • Ability to respond patiently and effectively to questions asked by patients, family, providers and staff
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with patients, visitors and coworkers
  • Proficient computer skills
  • Ability to use office equipment
  • Ability to set priorities and manage time effectively
  • Consistently demonstrates attention to detail in completing tasks, ensuring accuracy and preventing errors to maintain high-quality outcomes

Nice To Haves

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Completion of a HUC or related healthcare education program
  • Previous experience using an electronic medical record
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Demonstrates understanding of patient rights and privacy

Responsibilities
