Under the direction of nursing leadership, the Health Unit Coordinator facilitates unit organization and patient care by assisting in the coordination of patient, nursing, physician, and other healthcare provider office and clerical activities. Essential functions include Patient Care Support such as assisting with admission, discharge, and transfer of patients, answering patient call lights, scheduling tests and treatments, providing access control to secure units, performing telemetry duties, and potentially delivering medications to the RN. Clerical Support involves answering unit telephones, processing, organizing, filing, and maintaining patient and unit records, transcribing physician orders, acting as unit receptionist, and organizing, stocking, and maintaining supplies. The role also requires Collaboration and Customer Service, performing functions delegated by nursing management, demonstrating effective teamwork, prioritization, communication, and organization, and providing excellent customer service to patients, families, physicians, nursing, and other ancillary services.
