About The Position

This position is responsible for providing health support services within a school setting. Key duties include administering first aid and emergency care, managing student medications, performing basic nursing procedures, maintaining health records, and assisting the Registered Nurse (RN) with various health-related tasks. The role also involves clerical duties such as completing logs, organizing files, and managing clinic supplies, as well as handling immunization data. The technician will work within the Largo Health Department and may be required to provide backup at other school locations.

Requirements

  • Possess a current, unrestricted CNA license or Medical Assistant registration per Chapter 464, Title XXXII Certified Nursing Assistants (ss. 464.201–464.208).
  • Possess a current CPR certification.
  • Able to work a 10-month work schedule following the school calendar.
  • Hold a current Florida Driver’s license and access to and use of dependable transportation.
  • Exhibit at least 1 year experience working as a CNA or Medical Assistant.
  • Have experience operating computers and using Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel.
  • Knowledge of normal and abnormal health conditions and basic medical terminology.
  • Skill in using medical instruments or testing equipment.
  • Skill in taking vital signs.
  • Skill in the use of personal computers and software programs.
  • Ability to keep accurate records, compile data and prepare reports.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to understand and apply rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to prepare reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Responsibilities

  • Provide first aid, acute and emergency care to ill/injured students, faculty, and staff.
  • Receive and manage all student medications per established protocol, including counting, logging, and documenting.
  • Supervise the safe and accurate self-administration of medications by students, including administering insulin.
  • Perform safe and accurate nursing procedures for ordered treatments.
  • Take vital signs, including temperature, blood pressure, and pulse.
  • Receive and log phone calls regarding student illnesses and absenteeism.
  • Assist RN in identifying student health problems by reviewing health records and assisting with health needs and medication lists.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all records and client interactions per HIPAA and FERPA.
  • Document all services, assessments, interactions, and reactions on appropriate forms.
  • Staff and maintain the health room, ensuring cleanliness and adherence to universal precautions.
  • Dispose of used materials and supplies appropriately.
  • Complete daily and weekly clinic logs.
  • Organize and maintain student records and filing systems.
  • Enter data into the approved data system software.
  • Oversee distribution, collection, and filing of clinic cards.
  • Complete the clinic portion of accident and injury reports.
  • Maintain inventory of clinic supplies and forms.
  • Prepare and update clinic forms and paperwork.
  • Assist RN with the preparation of medical records for Quality Assurance Review.
  • Complete required agency reports and forms, including timesheets, EARS, and Travel.
  • Routinely review immunization data in FOCUS and FLShots to ensure student immunization status is up to date.
  • Follow up on students to determine if immunization status has been updated and exclude students if necessary.
  • Act as backup for Health Support Technicians at other school locations as needed.
  • Maintain CPR and First Aid Certifications.
  • Complete mandatory trainings, including how to administer insulin.
  • Establish and maintain good working relationships with students, parents, faculty, staff, and supervisor.
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings.
  • Utilize the computer daily for e-mail, communication, information, and documentation.
