About The Position

A WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor is a paraprofessional support person who gives basic breastfeeding information and encouragement to WIC pregnant and breastfeeding mothers. This role involves counseling mothers in person and by telephone, providing support outside of typical work hours for new mothers experiencing breastfeeding challenges, and educating them on the benefits of breastfeeding, overcoming barriers, and handling common concerns. The position also includes attending prenatal classes and support groups, monthly staff meetings, and breastfeeding conferences/workshops. Administrative duties include timely timesheet and EAR entry, and completion of mandatory trainings. The role may involve assisting WIC staff with breastfeeding peer counseling promotion through special projects. Confidentiality of mother's information and accurate record-keeping are essential. Referrals to WIC nutritionists, breastfeeding coordinators, lactation consultants, physicians, public health programs, and social service agencies are made according to established protocols.

Requirements

  • Must be willing to physically come in the office to perform the duties & responsibilities of the positions
  • Must have current authorization to work in the United States without employer sponsorship
  • Must have experience in breastfeeding
  • Knowledge of basic computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Knowledge of basic medical terminology.
  • Knowledge of data entry and/or documentation practices.
  • Ability to maintain records, organize, and coordinate work assignments, communicate, maintain effective working relationships and good rapport with co-workers and clients.
  • Ability to review data for accuracy and completeness.
  • Ability to follow instructions.
  • All Florida Department of Health positions require the incumbent to be able to learn and communicate effectively, orally and in writing, in English.

Responsibilities

  • Counsels WIC pregnant and breastfeeding mothers in office and/or by telephone
  • Is available outside the WIC clinic and the usual 8 to 5 working schedules to new mothers who are having breastfeeding problems
  • Gives basic breastfeeding information and support to new mothers, including telling them about the benefits of breastfeeding, overcoming common barriers and getting a good start with breastfeeding. She also helps mothers prevent and handle common breastfeeding concerns
  • Attends and assists with prenatal classes and breastfeeding support groups
  • Attends monthly staff meeting and breastfeeding conferences/workshops as appropriate
  • Inputs time sheet and EAR entry within the required time frame
  • Subject to emergency shelter duty in the event of a disaster
  • Completion of all mandatory or assigned trainings within the required time frame
  • May assist WIC staff in promoting breastfeeding peer counseling through special projects and duties as assigned
  • Respects each mother by keeping her information strictly confidential
  • Keep accurate records of all contacts made with WIC mothers
  • Refers mothers, according to clinic-established protocols, to: WIC nutritionist or breastfeeding coordinator, Lactation Consultant, Mother's physician or nurse, Public health programs in the community, Social service agencies
