About The Position

The Health Physicist will support the space program at NASA Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, California. The role provides professional oversight of research operations using ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, including lasers, ultraviolet light, microwave and radiofrequency transmitters. The position implements requirements of the NRC radioactive materials license and provides oversight of general license sources, radiation-generating machines, high-powered lasers, radiofrequency radiation, and other non-ionizing radiation sources. The Health Physicist partners with the NASA ARC Radiation Safety Officer to manage and continually improve the Center’s radiation safety program. The role also provides technical leadership for health physics staff and administrative support to the Ionizing and Nonionizing Radiation Safety Committees. The position has a hybrid work schedule, may require some travel, and schedules may change based on position or customer needs. Candidates must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents because of the sensitivity of customer-related information. Employees must pass a national agency check; some positions require clearance and extensive background verification. A pre-employment drug screen and participation in periodic random drug and alcohol screenings are required. The work is generally in an office environment, but may involve indoor or outdoor work depending on the task. Regular attendance is critical, and the employee must be able to work outside the normal schedule and adjust schedules for peak periods and surge requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in health physics, science, or engineering and a minimum of 5 years of recent, related work experience with high-powered lasers, radiofrequency radiation, and other non-ionizing radiation sources; alternatively, a Certified Health Physicist certified by the American Board of Health Physics in the Comprehensive Practice of Health Physics with a minimum of 9 years of recent, related experience will be considered.
  • U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status.
