Health Physicist

Standard Nuclear•Oak Ridge, TN
•Onsite

About The Position

The Health Physicist supports Standard Nuclear’s radiological protection program by evaluating radiation hazards, developing protective measures, and ensuring safe working conditions across nuclear fuel manufacturing, laboratory, and material processing operations. This hands-on technical role provides expertise in radiation protection, contamination control, exposure assessment, and regulatory compliance. The Health Physicist applies health physics principles and sound judgment to translate radiological requirements into practical operational controls, working closely with radiological control technicians, manufacturing, engineering, EH&S, quality, and licensing teams as the company expands its manufacturing capabilities. The role is based in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, and spans office, laboratory, manufacturing, and controlled radiological environments. Work may involve nuclear fuel processing areas, radiological surveys, contamination monitoring, airborne radioactivity assessments, controlled areas, and required PPE. The employee is expected to follow site safety, quality, radiological, environmental, and operational procedures. Reasonable accommodation may be provided to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Radiation Protection, Physics, or a related technical discipline.
  • 3–7 years of experience in health physics, radiation protection, radiological safety, or related nuclear operations.
  • Strong understanding of radiation detection, radiation measurement, contamination control, dosimetry, and exposure assessment.
  • Experience performing radiological calculations involving internal and external dose, shielding, airborne radioactivity, and radiation hazards.
  • Familiarity with applicable NRC and DOE radiation protection requirements, including 10 CFR Part 20 and 10 CFR Part 835, as relevant to facility operations.
  • Experience conducting radiological hazard assessments and developing operational controls for radioactive material handling and processing.
  • Knowledge of ALARA principles, radiological work permits, radiation monitoring instruments, and personnel protective measures.
  • Experience developing technical procedures, radiological reports, compliance documentation, and corrective action plans.
  • Ability to work effectively with radiological control technicians, engineers, operators, and safety personnel in operational environments.
  • Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and ability to communicate technical findings and recommendations clearly.
  • Applicants must be U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, protected individuals as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience supporting radiological protection programs in nuclear facilities, fuel fabrication, uranium processing, national laboratories, or other regulated environments.
  • Certified Health Physicist (CHP) designation or progress toward certification.

Responsibilities
