About The Position

This Direct Hire Authority public notice covers positions in various organizations within the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), in the 1301 General Physical Science and/or 1306 Health Physics occupational series. Applications are placed in a resume database and may be considered by selecting officials during the notice period or after it closes. Duties vary by position, series, and grade level. NRC employees help protect public health and safety and the environment, safeguard nuclear materials and facilities in the interest of national security, and ensure conformity with antitrust laws. The agency carries out these responsibilities through standards-setting and rulemaking, technical reviews and studies, public hearings, authorizations, permits and licenses, inspections, investigations and enforcement, operating-experience evaluations, and confirmatory research. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and meet the applicable qualifications by 30 calendar days after the notice closing date and before placement. Candidates must meet the Federal education and professional knowledge requirements for the applicable series and grade, as well as specialized-experience requirements. Grade GG-11 may be qualified for with a doctorate in or related to a physical science discipline, a master's degree plus one year of post-degree work experience, or a bachelor's degree plus two years of post-degree work experience in or related to physical science. GG-12 and above require one year of experience at the next lower Federal grade or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience applies professional scientific disciplines relevant to the positions. The ideal candidate demonstrates knowledge of applicable scientific requirements, policies, practices, and programs; ability to plan, direct, coordinate, and manage complex technical projects; ability to present technical information orally and in writing; and ability to develop and implement effective problem-solving and conflict-resolution approaches. Applicants must explain their relevant experience in their resume and may provide additional information in the supplemental vacancy question. Transcripts are required with the application. Education must be from an accredited or pre-accredited institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Foreign education requires evidence of U.S. equivalency, with documentation in English or accompanied by an English translation. The position may be eligible for situational telework under agency policy. Employment is subject to drug testing, security and suitability requirements, and may involve confidential financial disclosure and security ownership restriction reporting. Selectees must complete a Declaration of Federal Employment and undergo a background investigation; a temporary waiver may permit starting work before clearance, subject to specified checks and subsequent favorable adjudication. A one- or two-year trial period is required, after which employment ends unless the employee receives written certification that continued employment advances the public interest.
