About The Position

Under the supervision of the Environmental Health Director or designee, this position performs routine tasks that follow well-established, standardized procedures that can be easily learned on the job. The Health Inspector is responsible for accurately documenting all time worked, operating county vehicles and equipment, and performing various inspections and public outreach activities related to environmental health.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of sanitation duties in the environmental field.
  • Must currently possess or obtain within one year of employment the On-Site Sewage Facilities (OSSF) Designated Representative License.
  • Must currently possess or obtain within one year of employment the Noncommercial Pesticide Applicator License.
  • Must maintain licensures active while employed with the Cameron County Public Health Environmental Health Program.
  • Valid Texas Driver's License.
  • Comply with State of Texas Driving Laws.
  • Maintain an acceptable driving record.
  • Reliable transportation.
  • Ability to work after hours, weekends, and holidays.
  • Criminal background check is required for employment or continued employment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively (oral, written and Spanish speaking ability).
  • Good health and physical condition sufficient to permit full performance of the duties of the position.
  • Must be able to lift at least fifty pounds (50 lbs).

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of State laws and local orders regarding on-site sewage facilities and general sanitation regulations.
  • Knowledge of vector control rules and regulations.
  • Ability to work on small engines.
  • Ability to correctly calibrate mosquito equipment (ULV machines) to meet minimum requirements.
  • Ability to safely measure and mix chemicals.
  • Ability to fill out daily reports.
  • Ability to operate adding machine to accurately calculate totals.
  • Ability to organize presentations/workshops as they are required.

Responsibilities

  • Accurately document all time worked.
  • Operate county vehicles and other equipment within policy and procedures.
  • Perform adulticide and larvicide treatments in rural areas for mosquitoes and larva.
  • Collect and submit mosquito larva and adult mosquitoes for testing.
  • Maintain daily records of areas treated for mosquitoes and larva.
  • File results on larva and mosquitoes collected.
  • Maintain all mosquito spraying equipment.
  • Assist Animal Control Program during disasters or emergencies.
  • Assist Animal Control Program on annual rabies clinics.
  • Inspect and investigate complaints pertaining to tall grass, standing water, excessive rodent problems, and unidentified bee swarms.
  • Conduct inspections of eating and drinking establishments, grocery stores, tortillerias, bakeries, day care centers, and school cafeterias.
  • Prepare and provide presentations/workshops on person hygiene, rat proofing, and vector control to schools, daycare centers, civic groups, and door-to-door.
  • Participate in health fairs disseminating information on general sanitation, vector control, animal control, on-site sewage facilities, food establishments, and other environmental health issues.
  • Conduct on-site sewage facilities inspections and investigate complaints.
  • Review installer/engineer designs submitted for approval.
  • Conduct inspections on existing septic systems (probe inspections) to determine if they meet up-to-date standards.
  • Review documents pertaining to residential/commercial water wells.
  • Conduct inspections/research paperwork submitted by engineering/surveying firms on proposed subdivision plats for approval.
  • Keep the public aware through TV/radio/newspaper of current/proposed activities that would be beneficial to them.
  • Investigate all complaints received within 72 hours (tall grass, raw sewage, illegal installations, and establishments with unsanitary conditions).
  • Assist office with incoming calls and provide general information to the public.
  • Train new staff in their respective fields.
  • Make daily reports to the Environmental Health Director.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
