About The Position

The Environmental Health Inspector II is a mid-level position responsible for conducting inspections, investigations, and assessments related to public health and environmental safety. This position ensures that businesses, facilities, and organizations comply with environmental health regulations to protect the community’s health. The Environmental Health Inspector II works independently with some oversight from supervisors and provides guidance to entry-level inspectors.

Requirements

  • Comprehensive knowledge of environmental health regulations, sanitation, food safety, water quality standards, and other related areas.
  • Strong inspection and investigation skills, data collection, and report writing.
  • Proficiency in using inspection tools and relevant software.
  • Ability to enforce regulations fairly and impartially, communicate effectively with facility operators and the public, and analyze environmental health data to make informed decisions.
  • Certification as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) or eligible for certification.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal environmental health regulations and enforcement practices.
  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental health, public health, biology, or a related field.
  • At least 2 years of experience in environmental health inspection or a closely related field.
  • Frequent in-state and limited out-of-state travel is required.
  • A valid driver’s license is required.
  • This employee is required to carry a cell phone 24/7/365 and respond to emergencies.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct regular inspections and investigations of facilities, including food establishments, hotels, schools, waste disposal sites, and water systems, to ensure compliance with environmental health standards.
  • Identify and document violations of health and safety codes and recommend corrective actions.
  • Educate facility owners and operators about health regulations and best practices for compliance.
  • Prepare detailed reports on inspections, violations, and corrective actions.
  • Assist in the planning and execution of public health initiatives, including disease control measures and health education programs.
  • Respond to public health emergencies and environmental complaints as needed.
  • Maintain accurate records of inspections, citations, and enforcement actions.
