About The Position

Uses skills as a seasoned, experienced health education professional with a full understanding of industry practices and campus policies and procedures; resolves a wide range of issues. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. The Health Educator position is a budgeted role within the UC Pancreas Cancer Center Consortium. The incumbent will provide psychoeducational and educational support to patients with pancreatic cancer participating in a pilot research study conducted across multiple University of California campuses. In this role, the Health Educator will provide evidence-based health education and psychoeducation related to the study protocol, treatment, and supportive care interventions. The incumbent will educate participants on study procedures, reinforce key health and wellness concepts, facilitate access to educational and supportive resources, and promote participant engagement throughout the research process. The Health Educator will support participants across multiple UC sites and collaborate closely with a multidisciplinary team of investigators, clinicians, and research staff to ensure consistent delivery of patient-centered education and contribute to the successful implementation of research initiatives aimed at improving supportive care and health outcomes. This is a limited anticipated utilization position. Approximately three counseling sessions are expected during the first year of the pilot project, with the potential for adjustment based on study needs and participant enrollment. The Division of Hematology/Oncology is the largest Division in the Department of Medicine (DOM). Currently, the Division has 100+ Full-time faculty, 11 part-time and/or volunteer faculty, 29 Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and non-ACGME fellows, 22 post-doctoral fellows, 32 Non-faculty appointments and 48 administrative and research staff. The Division’s research, clinical and teaching functions are primarily split between the Parnassus and Mission Bay campuses, although the faculty, fellows, and staff have appointments and clinical, research, and educational activities at Zuckerberg San Francisco General (ZSFG), and Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) as well.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree in related area and three or more years of relevant experience / or equivalent experience / training.
Thorough knowledge of the health promotion and education field.
Thorough knowledge of the design and delivery of related programs.
Skills associated with both the development and delivery of health education programs and services.

Responsibilities

Assists in promoting health education components to physicians, staff, and patients through meeting presentations, printed promotional material, etc.
Provide psychoeducation and educational support to study patients
Delivers individualized and group education sessions to promote participant understanding of study procedures, treatment expectations, and self-management strategies.
Educate / clarify any misconceptions patients and their families may have pertaining to their cancer diagnosis.
Develops, implements and evaluates effectiveness of health promotion / education programs.
Develop new educational programs / initiatives for patients
Assesses participants' educational needs and adapts educational materials and teaching methods to support health literacy and cultural appropriateness.
Assesses the effectiveness of course content and training techniques for individual programs.
Meet with the P.I.’s and research staff at the participating UC sites to troubleshoot, review, and analyze this e-counseling approach (focusing on feasibility, refining the training materials, and looking at qualitative outcomes measures), as well as to discuss how these pilot data may inform a larger-scale initiative.
Conducts needs analysis for health promotion and education
Conducts health education needs assessments by collecting and analyzing quantitative and qualitative data from patients, participants, and stakeholders.
Monitors trends in patient outcomes and program utilization to identify opportunities for new or enhanced health education initiatives.
Analyzes assessment findings and prepares reports with recommendations for health promotion strategies and educational interventions.
