About The Position

The Health Educator plans, develops, presents and evaluates community health education programs and activities held in the communities served by Carilion Clinic. Provides and manages health education programs that help individuals, families, and their communities maximize and maintain healthy lifestyles. Functions as a team member to advance Carilion Clinic’s goals through health education and by serving as a resource on community health issues. Works collaboratively with minimal supervision. The Health Educator plans and implements evidence-based health education programs and practices to influence health behavior change among underserved audiences. Produces quality health communications including content for social media, printable materials, and talking points in collaboration with team members. Coordinates policy, systems, and environmental change projects with community partners to support community health and wellbeing. Completes data collection and reporting on health education initiatives according to established processes. Collaborates with other Carilion Clinic departments, providers, and hospitals and community service organizations to promote health education interventions and align initiatives that improve the health of communities in response to results of Community Health Needs Assessments. Enhances personal and team development related to health education programs and practices. Works to continuously improve and stays current on community health education issues and interventions. Represents Carilion Clinic through positive interaction with the community and media to increase awareness of health issues and the programs Carilion Clinic offers to the general public. Consistently deliver the best in customer service and patient care. As a team member, demonstrate respect, dignity, kindness and empathy in each encounter with patients, families, visitors and other employees. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in health education, public health, health communication, health promotion, or another health-related field is required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of professional experience required.
  • Virginia Driver’s license required.
  • CPR & First Aid Certification required within 6 months of hire into the position.
  • AHA BLS-HCP certification required.
  • Ability to implement programs that reach community members of all ages, with diverse backgrounds, and with low socioeconomic status.
  • Well-organized, proficient at multi-tasking and working with minimal supervision.
  • Must possess excellent organizational skills and proficiency in written and verbal communication.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Job often requires working outside Carilion Clinic facilities and travel to sites within the Clinic’s service area.
  • Must provide own transportation.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Public Health preferred.
  • Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) designation or eligible to sit for the CHES exam within the first three years of employment preferred.
