About The Position

Reporting to the Health and Safety Manager, the Health and Safety Superintendent will assist the Manager in coordinating the Health & Safety department in providing the appropriate training and safety guidance to all employees in all departments; including contractors. This role promotes, coordinates and implements activities to improve and maintain high levels of safety performance across the mine site. This role acts as a resource for all of the workplace parties and an advocate of the Internal responsibility System (IRS).

Requirements

  • Minimum grade 12 completion; technical diploma preferred.
  • Good understanding and working knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and Regulations for Mines & Mining Plants, surface and underground mine rescue training, WHMIS and Loss Control techniques.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Accreditation in the Underground Supervisory Common Core.
  • Accredited Safety Auditor.
  • 10 years’ experience working in mining operations.
  • Minimum 5 years of leadership experience.
  • Good problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment.
  • Ability to plan and schedule programs and activities.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the inherent programs i.e. Hazard & Risk Recognition and Mitigation, Safety Meetings, Event Reporting and Investigation quality, Action Management, Contractor Safety Management, etc.
  • Assist in drafting and reviewing job procedures relevant to health, safety and security.
  • Monitor the functioning of the IRS and make recommendations for its improvement.
  • Regularly audit or arrange for the audit of the elements of the health and safety system, and to suggest ways of improving them.
  • Regularly audit and inspect the operation for compliance with the Act, Regulations and company policies / procedures.
  • Report to departmental manager on the safety and health status of the operation.
  • Advise workers, supervisors and management personnel on technical safety & health matters.
  • Provide management with statistical reports, in departmental managers absence.
  • Actively participate in safety groups i.e. Musselwhite Safety Group, WSN technical committee(s), Ontario Mining Association, etc as needed.
  • Attend crew safety meetings.
  • Supervise and support the Occupational Health Nurses with preventative programs and WSIB issues.
  • Oversee and promote use of FRA (Formal Risk Assessment), JHA (Job Hazard Analysis) and FLRA (Field Level Risk Asessment) processes.
  • Assist in managing site security contractor group.
  • Assist in management of site clinic facility and occupational health team.
  • Assist in managing department budget.
  • Work closely with the Technical Training and Emergency Services Superintendent and provide support with training and emergency response initiatives.
  • Ensure reportable incidents to the Ministry of Labour are communicated in a timely manner, and orders are completed.
  • Interacts with Department Heads, Superintendents, Coordinators, Front Line Supervisors and employees.
  • Interact with outside agencies i.e. WSIB, Ministry of Labour, Ministry of Colleges and Universities, etc.
  • All other relevant duties as assigned by the Health and Safety Manager.
