About The Position

The Head Athletic Coach will supervise the athletic program for which assigned and coach the varsity team of his/her school. The Head Coach will direct programs which will instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy, safety procedures and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success. At the same time, the athletes shall receive instruction that will lead to the formation of moral values, price of accomplishment, good sportsmanship, self-discipline, and self-confidence. The Head Athletic Coach supervises the Assistant Coaches of the program assigned, participating athletes, managers, and student assistants. It is the intent of this job description to give sufficient guidance to function. In case not specifically covered, it shall be assumed that a coach shall exercise common sense and good judgment.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of rules and regulations of the sport to which assigned.
  • Knowledge of fundamentals, techniques, and strategies of the sport to which assigned.
  • Knowledge of safety factors involved in the sport assigned.
  • Knowledge of the physical ability and limitations of the level he/she is teaching.
  • Knowledge of the Medford School District Athletic Policies, SOMSAC and OSAA Rules and Regulations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with people.
  • Ability to demonstrate basic skills of sport to which assigned.
  • Ability to organize, supervise, and evaluate the total sport program.
  • Must be positive.
  • Should be enthusiastic.
  • Should possess a willingness to cooperate and to adjust to various situations.
  • Must possess a current First Aid card within one month of hire.
  • Blood borne pathogen training.
  • Blood spill training.
  • Pre-employment fingerprints and illegal drug testing.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous coaching experience of sport to which assigned is preferred.
  • Previous experience as participant of sport to which assigned preferred.
  • Previous teaching experience preferred.
  • Valid Oregon teacher certification is preferred.
  • College training in coaching desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise the athletic program for which assigned and coach the varsity team of his/her school.
  • Direct programs which will instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy, safety procedures and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success.
  • Instruct athletes in moral values, pride of accomplishment, good sportsmanship, self-discipline, and self-confidence.
  • Supervise Assistant Coaches, participating athletes, managers, and student assistants.
  • Have a thorough knowledge of all the Athletic Policies endorsed by the Medford School District Board of Education and be responsible for its implementation by the entire staff of the program assigned.
  • Have knowledge of Oregon School Activities Association rules and regulations as well as Southern Oregon Middle School Athletic Conference Rules; implement those same consistently and interpret them for staff.
  • Understand the proper administrative line of command and refer all requests or grievances through proper channels.
  • Work to increase morale and cooperation within the school's entire athletic program.
  • Know effective safety procedures in their sport, plan and implement a program of instruction in safe practices.
  • Establish the fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques to be taught by staff.
  • Design and conduct a clinic for the program assigned for staff.
  • Train and inform staff; encourage professional growth by attendance at clinics according to district clinic policy and funds available.
  • Delegate specific duties, supervise implementation, and at season's end, analyze staff effectiveness and work cooperatively with the building principal in an evaluation of all assistants.
  • Perform such other duties as may be assigned by the Principal and Coordinator of Secondary Athletics.
  • Assist the Activities Director in scheduling and providing transportation.
  • Check the athletic schedule for conflicts and make necessary confirmations.
  • Assist in the necessary preparation to hold scheduled athletic events or practices and adhere to scheduled facility times.
  • Coordinate program with maintenance and school employees.
  • Be responsible to the principal for compliance with school district, SOMSAC and OSAA requirements concerning physical examinations, parental consent forms, insurance waivers, and academic/residence eligibility.
  • Provide proper safeguards for maintenance and protection of assigned equipment and facilities.
  • Advise the Activities Director and recommend policy, method, or procedural changes.
  • Prepare the annual season summary at the conclusion of the sport season.
  • Provide training rules and any other unique regulations of the sport to each athlete who is considered a participant.
  • Give constant attention to an athlete's grades and conduct.
  • Supervise the athletes before, during, and after practices, contests, or while traveling, and provide by his/her presence proper guidance and safeguards for each participant.
  • Initiate programs and policies concerning injuries, medical attention, and emergencies.
  • Work cooperatively with the athletic trainer in matters of injury, prevention, and the care and rehabilitation of athletic injuries.
  • Ensure completion of paperwork on all athletic injuries on proper forms and submit to the proper office within 24 hours of the injury.
  • Direct student managers, assistants and statisticians.
  • Determine discipline, in accordance with State, District, and School guidelines, policies and procedures.
  • Teach athletes rules and procedures concerning due process when the enforcement of discipline is necessary.
  • Contact parents when a student is dropped or becomes ineligible for team rule infractions.
  • Participate in the budgeting function by identifying equipment and supply specifications such as type, style, color, or technical information and seeking cost estimates from vendors.
  • Be responsible for knowing the program's budget and operating within budget appropriations.
  • Be accountable for all supplies and equipment and report the cost to the Activities Office of any equipment/supplies lost or not returned.
  • Arrange for issuing, storing, and reconditioning of equipment and submit an annual inventory.
  • Be responsible to ensure accuracy of fine and hold notices on lost or stolen equipment.
  • Be knowledgeable of district purchasing procedures and timelines and follow those methods in the purchase of supplies and equipment.
  • Supervise marking and identification of equipment before issuing and storing.
  • Supervise equipment rooms, coaches' offices, and the issue or requisition of equipment.
  • Examine locker rooms before and after practices and games, checking on general cleanliness of the facility.
  • Be responsible for cleanliness and maintenance of specific sport equipment.
  • Secure all doors, lights, windows, and locks before leaving building if custodians are not on duty.
  • Instill in each player a respect for equipment and school property, its care and proper use.
  • Organize parents, coaches, players, and guests for pre-season meetings.
  • Promote the sport within the school through encouraging participation of athletes that are not in another sports program and promote the sport outside the school through booster clubs, YMCA youth sports programs, and other youth sports organizations.
  • Be responsible for maintaining good public relations with booster club, officials, volunteers, faculty, parents, and fans.
